nVIDIA's 8400 GT was designed for business graphics, not for games. The card is now five years old, which is a very, VERY long time for low end video. Put the same already low quality part into a laptop, and it has less capability than a more up to date onboard integrated video chip, so that there is nothing available to improve its poor performance, short of replacing the very elderly laptop, or choosing much older games, more appropriate to the graphics quality involved.
The choice of driver isn't a variable that will be of major importance in this case. The easiest test is to seek a three year old Geforce driver, the same age as DA: O is.
(And: If you think the Geforce 8400 card will suddenly change from a poor old Sow's Ear into a lovely silk purse just by asking the same question on a different forum, you are mistaken. Sorry, but pigs simply do not fly.)
