I've cleared the first level and am completely overloaded with loot -- should I toss the less valuable stuff or can I come back to the level after I sell some loot at a store?
Can I get back inside the Catacombs under Candlekeep?

Am a bit unclear as to what you mean by the 1st level.
If you mean the area where you get the tomes etc. and fight doppelgangers of Elminster, Gorion etc. then no you can't go back. (Well not legally anyway). You could use Ctrl X to find the area code and later use the MovetoArea command to return, but that would IMO be cheating. Of course I have a mod installed that gives you a bag of holding. I suppose that some might call that cheating too.
