In DAO it seemed a lot easier to talk to companions without conversation having to be quest related. For example, Leliana'a song had nothing to do with the main quest or even the romance option, but if you took the time to talk to her, to get to know her character, it was much more rewarding than in DA2 where most of the time the only response you got from a companion was to check back later. Sure, there was a limit to the number of topics you could talk to a companion about, but in DAO i could always go back to leliana and hear her tell one of her stories again.
the gift system in DAO also seemed easier for getting characters to open up. In DAO you had to listen to the conversation and pick up on the things that they liked. Morrigan mentions the story about the mirror, Leliana anything chantry related, ohgren likes to drink. In DA2 you pick up some object that is specifically related to that character, whether they've mentioned it or not.
The way the companions were done in DA2 i wasnt as interested in the charachters as the dialogue felt limited. Unless i was romancing a companion the relationships never built any depth. DAO, i never romanced Altair or Zevran or Wynne, but i always went back to talk to them because they added so much to the story.
My only other comment on companions is that I hated Anders in DA2 (he didnt bother me in Awakening) cause if i was a guy it felt like i couldnt be nice to him without him making a pass at me which wasnt something i was interested in, which made me feel like the only way i could talk to him was to either be a complete bastard to him or to be unsympathetic to his troubles.
I replayed DAO about a dozen times, i never finished my second playthrough for DA2. There are other reasons i didnt like DA2 but character relationships was a big one.
