One of the problems I had with DA2 was that since the companions were spread across all of Kirkwall it was more difficult to get interested in them.  the campfire was nice because in between quests you had a spot where everyone is in close proximity.  At that, in DA2,  you could only talk to them if they had some mission/campaign dialogue to tell you.

In DAO it seemed a lot easier to talk to companions without conversation having to be quest related.  For example, Leliana'a song had nothing to do with the main quest or even the romance option, but if you took the time to talk to her, to get to know her character, it was much more rewarding than in DA2 where most of the time the only response you got from a companion was to check back later. Sure, there was a limit to the number of topics you could talk to a companion about, but in DAO i could always go back to leliana and hear her tell one of her stories again.

the gift system in DAO also seemed easier for getting characters to open up.    In DAO you had to listen to the conversation and pick up on the things that they liked. Morrigan mentions the story about the mirror, Leliana anything chantry related, ohgren likes to drink. In DA2 you pick up some object that is specifically related to that character, whether they've mentioned it or not.

The way the companions were done in DA2 i wasnt as interested in the charachters as the dialogue felt limited.  Unless i was romancing a companion the relationships never built any depth. DAO, i never romanced Altair or Zevran or Wynne, but i always went back to talk to them because they added so much to the story.

My only other comment on companions is that I hated Anders in DA2 (he didnt bother me in Awakening) cause if i was a guy it felt like i couldnt be nice to him without him making a pass at me which wasnt something i was interested in, which made me feel like the only way i could talk to him was to either be a complete bastard to him or to be unsympathetic to his troubles.

I replayed DAO about a dozen times, i never finished my second playthrough for DA2.  There are other reasons i didnt like DA2 but character relationships was a big one.

Bruh...Return key broken?

On topic: We have a castle now, so we don't need to camp in the woods like wilder savages anymore.

If they do it right, it'll probably be a variation thereof.

Edit: A little clarification: what he meant was he wanted a party base where you can talk to all of your party members, give gifts easily, etc. Which doesn't rule out said base being a castle.

(The reason this wasn't all in the original post was I thought my post would be right under Emzam's and I think the original wording makes a little more sense in that context.)

Campfire, no. Castle, yes.

Let's compromise with a campy castle that is on fire.

Why can't we have both? I doubt we'll be getting the castle from the beginning of the game anyway.

I would like a campfire during long travels. Maybe they could add some negative effects on party members if you travel without a rest or add some random events, which only occur during campfire.

But when we DO get the castle, I'm sure there'll be a nice big fireplace. Compromise enough? ^_^

wow, nice wall of text their topic creator, it really makes me not want to read that; or skim read as i normally do on these questionible topics

Regardless i'll presume bioware is smart enough to take advantage of the fact that the castle will allow both the unique locales suited to the companions behaviors while keeping them closer together like the camp did

I honestly liked that the characters had their own haunts so to speak in DA2. That's not to say the return of some sort of communal camp wouldn't be acceptable if it fits the story of the inquisitor

If the castle is the party camp it would be a good opportunity to have both the personal feel of some of the homes in DA2 and the convenience of the camp.

I wish they'd go back to the travel system of DAO, with moving on the map and random encounters. That way you could travel to your castle, but you could access your camp at any time. Unfortunately, I doubt this will be the case.

What matters is that party interaction is well-written and meaningful, through indeed having a "cozy place" should allow for more intimacy, just like in DAO.

The campfire is getting replaced with a castle.
