Griffons are extinct in Thedas.

So were dragons. And given the ominous prophecy "everyone will be like they were", this could very well count for the Grey Wardens and their Griffins as well.

A Griffin vs Archdemon airbattle doesn't really fit into established gameplay, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. It would be epic and I want it !

@ Bolded: This

@ Normal text: I don't think that would be possible, however I still think a griffin would be a better option then the dog.

Instead of mabari, give each PC a Segway? It would speed up travel and combat would be endlessly entertaining. :wizard:

They're not going to say "Whoops, I guess the griffins are NOT extinct" just to give us an animal companion. That s**t needs build-up, yo.

Anyways, we don't need a griffin. We need a tame ghast companion.

Griffins are associated with the Grey Wardens and the Anderfels. Considering we're gonna be an Inquisitor from Orlais... yeah, I don't think it's gonna happen (also, they're extinct - but then again, people thought the High Dragons were extinct too).

I suppose we could get a Mabari again, since Orlais did occupy Ferelden for a while so some Orlesian families may have managed to get their hands on some (and keep their loyalty).

Still, I'd prefer neither dog nor griffin for a pet in DA3. What's a typically Orlesian animal, I wonder.

It could be found during a quest; Your character is exploring an old abandoned Grey Warden Frortress that used to house griffins or something like that. Bioware doesn't have to just throw it in the game and say "Oops, I guess they aren't extinct. Dragons were "exinct".

But dragons came back before the start of DAO. Everyone knew the dragons were back; they even named the current century after them. You could locate one during a quest, but the discovery of living griffins would be a big deal across Thedas. You'd likely have to fight the Grey Wardens to keep a living specimen.

Also, I should note that you haven't even seen griffins. You might as well ask for Sasquatch as a companion; you have the same rough idea as to its combat capabilities.

That's why we should have a ghast! Ghasts are tough, they're smart and they're capable of both melee and ranged fighting.

The point is that even though they said they were extinct that doesn't mean they really are.  You woudn't have to fight the grey wardens to own them, it's an animal they can't own a whole species.

Griffins are part of DA lore while big foot isn't. Putting a griffin in the game wouldn't be far fetched; putting a sasquatch would be.

I don't think a Griffon would really fit in, since the role isn't that of a Warden this time round.

I wonder if they breed some kind of large cats. Look elegant, but killer teeth and claws. I'd take it.

I hope we get a dog again, but since we're in Orlais...we should be able to put it in a ugly dog sweater.

In a place like Dragon Age universe, I find hard to gryphoons to be extinct. For nto having fast breading and reproduction like dragons, it would take century's before they reappear in the sky.

You don't think that the Grey Wardens would do anything to possess live specimens of a species used as a symbol of their order and a weapon against the darkspawn for centuries?

They might be willing to bargain with someone who knew where live griffins might be found, but really, I suspect they'd resort to torture, murder and worse to regain control of the griffins. Especially if there were enough of the creatures to form viable breeding stock.

I'd rather the iconic Dog not be replaced...

That's like removing all humor and companions from Bioware games. It would be a dagger in the heart.

From dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Codex_entry:_The_Mabari_Hound

"Ferelden lost many of its war dogs during the Blight and kennel masters selected your prized hound to strengthen their packs. He has been mated with female hounds from all over Ferelden and has sired several litters of puppies."
Opens up the possiblity for a descendant of Dog to be in the game. :wizard:

Wardens: We'd like your griffin.
Inquisitor: No.
Wardens: We'll pay you.
Inquisitor: No.
Wardens: We'll attack your Castle.
Inquisitor: Good luck.

I honestly don't think the wardens would pick a fight against the inquisitor over a griffin while the world is at war. They might attempt small scale raids, but other than that I don't see it happening.

"All right. You called our bluff. We're not going to attack your fortress. Such a move would be costly for the both of us. Instead, we're going to wait. We'll wait when the supply caravans to your castle go missing. We'll wait when your agents find themselves stonewalled at every turn or when they turn up face-down in some ditch with a dagger in their back. We'll wait when word spreads through the land that the Inquisition would not comply with a simple request from the Grey Wardens — the saviours of all Thedas. We'll wait while you fear to take a step outside your walls without being felled by an assassin's arrow."

"We'll wait until the end of the world, Inquisitor, because that is all the Grey Wardens do."
