I'm sure if we had children as a PC, they would be brutally murdered offscreen (but your lover murdered on-screen) by Gaider and Co. as the pretext for some "Punisher" or "Batman" style PC in the DA setting.

That would be interesting. And Might involve Blood Magic. Your family is not special. Just your family had an unlucky day with some blood mages. You are not special. Just a guy that was out shopping one day while his family was used in a blood magic ritual on a certain day.

Guys, there can be something for everyone! Horrible, brutal mind-scalding family slaughter for everyone 

Apostate background: Homicidal, sadistic templar (like Alrik)

Warrior background, Templar spec: Homicidal blood mage (aka Dawn of the Seeker - at least, from what the wiki says)

Rogue: The DA universe's equivalent of a Russian mobster complete with tracksuit (Coterie?)

There's your sidequest plot right there - Templar madman/murder fits up known Blood Mage for murders that he himself has commited.
