It seems there has been quite the debate on how to handle importing save files into the next game. If I may offer another solution, why not simply have something similar as the Mass Effect Radio in Mass Effect 2?

In my opinion, it seems like the best way to reflect upon the player's previous decision without having to force or shoe-horn a little sidequest that could be easily missed and downplays its importance. To me, the radio is most effective since it 1) shows the immediate effect of a player's previous decision and 2) implies a wider and greater social/political effect that can spark the imagination of fans.

Do you agree or disagree?

Yes, what with all the radios in Thedas...

Maybe you mean we run across a book/codex entry?

What about Heralds?

Well, the DA equivalent of radio would be tavern rumours, I guess.

It's a decent way to deal with stuff you don't want to handle in the game. But it doesn't work for stuff that you do want in the game. And having really big stuff happening off screen is storing up problems for the future - eventually you may want to go to a region where all your off screen stuff is relevant, and you've now created the expectation that all this will be taken into account.

Could work, but I honestly wouldn't stand around waiting to hear everything they say. Didn't do it for the news in ME, or the heralds in Orzammar in DAO.

If it works for other people tho, whatevs.

That was awful. I missed most of them, as I was running around trying to do things, not standing around listening to radios. ME1 did it best, by forcing you into a situation where you HAD to listen to the radio.

Heralds, tavern rumours and books referring to major offscreen events ("King Alistair fell from his horse again!" Posted Image) could be a nice touch...

...BUT if they'll be the only way in which save game imports will influence DA3, it will be a huge disappointment - they might as well not bother.

NO! Please, no equivalents of the elevator.

I guess they'll just have to stick with ambient conversations.

What was wrong with the elevator? They were great places to have your squadmates talk, or hear news and pick up minor quests.

Oh, you're probably a dirty console peasant, aren't you. I'm sorry.^_^

What does that have to do with anything? I game on a console and I loved the elevator segments of ME1. Maybe I should just generalize too and not be surprised that a PC gamer is a dick.

Relax, I'm joking.

However, elevators supposedly took forever on the 360. That's why.

Yep loved the very different feel the galactic news gave to the citadel dependent on your import. Having clickable heralds/criers who would reference some of the import stuff could potential work as a way of giving an ambiance of it being the players universe.

I shall still look at you suspiciously

The elevators really didn't take that long on the 360, I honestly don't know why people complain about it.

Last console I owned was a SNES (try play ME on that one).

I disliked them because they didn't bring me anything more then stopping me from playing. Banter could have been done much better anywhere.
The news where mostly about what I just had done and could also been places about anywhere so I can hear it while running past.
I don't need to hear every word they say about what I just did. Just hearing it in the back of my head while doing other stuff is enough to know the galaxy knows what I'm doing.

Immagine Orzammar and you have a scripted sequence every time you travel between Commons and Diamond District where you hear the heralds shout the news about  the Warden, Harrowmont and Bhelen. <the horror>

But the problem with that i if you're running past, you'll only hear like a quarter of what's being said--you'll miss what they're talking about.

I actually had (have) that problem in DA:O, whenever the criers say something I have to pause the game and look at them to read their subtitles before moving on. A transition would have helped, actually.

Finding some way to convey this kind of information during loading screens could work - that is essentially what ME1 did with the radios in elevators.

Loading screens are usually tedious in games. Making them not only less boring, but into a feature that actually engages the player is always a good idea.

You might not have liked the elevator radio in ME, but surely it was preferable to a static loading screen. An improvement over this would be most welcome.

For tiny things like in ME1 where you save toombs and convince him to shoot that scientist or not. And it changed a radio message thing in ME2. But for bigger stuff I would like to actually see stuff play out

Jwon that is a great idea to put what happened (with the minor things) on the loading screen and have the results of it on the loading screen. Bioware use this

Thanks.

Also, I hope that the writers go a little crazier with the impacts of minor decisions - this would be possible if the impacts were to be conveyed only in text/spoken form during loading screens. The letters in DA2 were a step in the right direction here. But I like the OP's idea of making imported decisions have an impact as well, so maybe something more like a newspaper or bulletin would work better.

Why not make a little feature in DAIII where you have a tick-box list where you can make all the descisions from the previous games that matter + the warden's and hawke's class so you can tailor the world to your liking every time you start a new game?
