This details Bioware's thoughts about companion armour customisation, with lots of concept pics. It's subject to change, but there's a good chance something similar will make it into the game.

This is rather sweet, but I am a bit conflicted about the concept of "visual identity".

On one hand, its cool that bits on the followers clothing peaks through and is incorperated into the armour,

on the other, why in heavens name does solid metal morph and shape into differnt geometry based on who is wearing it?

This happened in DA:O, just to a lesser extent. One could switch armor between Sten, Oghren, and (assuming the AW spec) Wynne. It's just that only the most obvious of traits were reflected in the armor's new shape. I actually think this new system is potentially cooler.

edit

We have more opportunities for variation when it comes to the color and material type of these individual pieces. Perhaps this is something we’ll even be able to offer to the player (in terms of customizing their own armor to their tastes),

PLEASE!!!

This would be volumes of cool to change the colours on our party. That was really neat in Baulders Gate.

Seconded, though I've never played Baldur's Gate.

If they do use the system they've talked about, I hope they don't have just have three or four different looks that they keep switching between.

Let us not forget that they said the same thing about Mass Effect 3. "Bringing back the RPG" was about as true as "We won't do a simple A,B,C, ending".

Wow! A person who actually knows how to back up their statements with *gasp* actual BioWare sources!!! I congratulate you sir or madam, whichever the case may be.

It's just marketing.

Whenever a game is a sequel it is always described as being better than the one that came before it, and having more of whatever features were popular.

So far this is not the case with Dragon Age 3, with one of the only things announced is the removal of the most demanded feature (race and origins).

This proposed customisation system is, as mentioned above, simply a refinement of the system we saw in DAO. In DAO, we could equip our entire party as we saw, and that armour changed shape to fit as appropriate based on race and gender. In DA3, it looks like we'll get the same, but he shape changing will now be character-specific.

That's not a significant difference.

DA2's system was nothing like this, as we were unable to equip our companions with armour at all.

Its not marketing it was an aside from a dev which was no doubt about things like facial customisation as others have said. I will say though that after DA2 and ME3 the devs really should be more careful about what they say even with little tidbits like this.

I think they meant the level of customization of the equipment alike. they mentioned this before in a blog article.
