Hey there, this has probably been asked before so I apologize for that. Anyway, I really want to get into modding but most toolsets are a bit above me. I'm determined to do even a small mod for this game, yet I need some help. The Wiki honestly did not help at all. It seemed to be written for someone with a moderate amount of experience. I just wanted to know if there is a walkthrough somewhere (preferably a written guide with screenies, but anythings good) to create a small sample map with a merchant or something. Just enough to get the basics on most of the stuff. I learn by doing stuff. I don't learn by having palettes and "3D Gui Mode" thrown in my face. Actually building a working map with a few NPCs and MAYBE a cinematic will allow me to get a firm enough grasp on the mechanics of the toolset to go on by myself.

Is there such a thing or am I going to be sitting here with a bottle of Advil for the next few hours before ragequitting? Thanks :)

Problem: I'm following a large series of videos and trying to do what the author is doing. The problem is that when I try to place a floor piece or a wall piece (that's as far as I've gotten) I get this message in the log window: "Cannot spawn models into the selected parent object." I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing wrong. I've got the object I want selected but when I click to place it, the log window pops up telling me to Gtfo, plz. This is exactly why I prefer a written form. It's quite pretty hard to see what I'm doing vs. What the person is doing on a small, poor quality video. Any know what I'm doing wrong?

In my opinion you should go slow and focus on one thing.

Make your map first.

Or if you want to do a cutscene, focus on making the cutscene first and nothing else.

You didn't help my problem, Jack. I can't do anything. The farthest I've gotten is laying down 6 large wooden tiles to make a floor. I can't place walls, people, or anything. Forget about triggers, lighting, etc.

By that error, it looks like you are trying to spawn a model into something other than the world space. If you look to the left there should be a hierarchy. Try changing which thing is selected and then try spawning a model.

Yeah, most of the videos create an area and then a room, make sure you have the room selected when you're placing stuff. It seems to get unselected a lot while you're working, keep an eye on it!

the youtube tutorials on level creation are ok, try the one from neverwintergirl(or so) or dragonage22(http://www.youtube.c...ser/dragonage22)

for other tutorials try the ones from silentCid(http://social.bioware.com/project/527/)

he is focusing on module creation and quests

look out for more from him

You can only place models in a level. To get it so you can place NPC's etc you have to export it and create a new area with that layout. Lighting is also done in the level editor. I suggest checking out the wiki - helped me get the ropes.

Aah! That was it. When it was saying something about the parent object I thought it was saying I had a placeable selected. Thanks very much :)

EDIT: Lmao, sorry but I do have one last question. What happens if I go off the grid? I've noticed that the grid they've given me is slightly irregular in dimension and I'm not going to mess with that stuff yet. I've allowed some wall pieces and floor pieces to go off the grid in hopes that they'll just be sliced later. Is this true?

The grid does nothing - just gives you an idea of the shape of the grid cells. You can expand rooms for miles if you so choose :P
