Your RPG Background?

The first RPG I ever played was Diablo. It was my first experience with any type of RPG, and I thought it was the best game in the world. My next RPG was Diablo II, which I found overly repetitive. I gave up on RPGs until I played Baldur's Gate II, which introduced me to D&D 2e. Some time after playing Throne of Bhaal, I bought the Core rulebooks for D&D 3e, and D&D 3.5 soon after.
Nowadays, I play D&D 4e through the Giant in the Playground Forums, in a format called play-by-post (PbP); I DM a campaign called the Cabinet of Faces, where all of the player characters are changelings (shapeshifters who can change their appearances as easily as one changes clothes). I have ten players divided into two parties named the Left Hand and the Right Hand, so-called because of where they are based; the Left Hand is in Breland, which is in southwestern Khorvaire (the main continent), while the Right Hand is in Karrnath, which is in northeastern Khorvaire.
I see a lot of D&D 4e in Dragon Age, and I think of it as the closest we will ever get to an official 4e game until Atari and Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast settle their lawsuit. Like 4e, each class has its own set of powers, which means that playing a martial character is more than just autoattacking the nearest enemy. The specializations are similar to 4e's paragon paths, which all characters can take once they reach level 11. And the various types of magic are akin to the multiple power sources that 4e characters can use (Martial, Arcane, Divine, Primal, Psionic, Shadow).
My favorite classes in D&D 4e are the warlord (a melee buffer that grants extra actions to allies) and the psion (Dominate!). In Dragon Age, my character is an Arcane Warrior, only because I unlocked this specialization before the Blood Mage. Unfortunately, as NPCs do not react differently to the main character's specialization, my hopes of enslaving the BBEG (big bad evil guy) like Lelouch in Code Geass have been dashed.
So, I repeat. What is your RPG background?

Despite jrpgs having turned based I actually prefer games like Kingdom Hearts nice button smashing fest. Yay for fun! Though games like Suikoden Tatics (which I have yet to beat >_> ) are highly enjoyable as well even if at times it makes my poor brain bleed.

Computer-wise, I've played Baldur's Gate games, Final Fantasy 7-10, Overlord 1 & 2 (they're not roleplay games but they still rock), tried some MMOs, Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines, Neverwinter Nights 1, Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall (the precursor to Morrowind, and was the best one in my mind), Diablo 1 and 2 (prefer the atmosphere in the first one), just started Mass Effect this week, probably others I can't recall right now, they haven't all been memorable. Oh and Dragon Age: Origins obviously.
I also Larp as well, mainly do one where I dress up as a pirate and go yargh lots at people. And get pissed lots. I actually do more larping at the moment than I do tabletop due to the distance from fellow rpers from me at the mo (they just haven't realised that they are moving over to where I live yet).

But that's not where i draw my line, i also enjoy RTS games, my alltime fave being Age of Mythology but i also enjoy Halo Wars for 360. Im a big FPS fan, cod4 and mw2 are must haves. And occasionaly i enjoy action/adventure games like Assassin's Creed and others.
Maybe it's just me but i enjoy almost all genre of games (Anyone else like this?)
But i guess its no surprise because im the same with my music: rock, rap, alternative, pop, pretty much anything besides country, gospel, and disney haha

As for CRPG, my first was either King's Quest I (if that can be considered a CRPG) or Bard's Tale I. Then picked up most of the big ones during the late 80s and early 90s (Bard's Tale II & III, Ultima IV - VII, Phantasie, Wizardry IV, Might and Magic I - IV, SSI AD&D "gold box games", etc). When I hit University, I didn't play a lot of games in general so I didn't play anything from 1993 - 2000 (which is why I never played Baldur's Gate). Got back into gaming with Diablo II and Warcraft III (Neither I consider true RPGs). After playing with some FPS games (Bioshock, Fallout 3 and Half-life 2), I felt the itch to play a modern CRPG. Heard good things about DA:O, gave it a try and the rest is (recent) history!

Although I failed miserably in EoB, I contiunued to play RPGs, learnt the rules, got more background knowledge etc. and never played adventure-games again.
With only a few exceptions I played them all (PC) since then.

Zelda: Link to the Past was my next game.
Final Fantasy 4 was my first of the series. I followed it with FF 6, Tactics, then going back to play FF 1, and FF 5 (emulator), and skipping both 7 and 8 to play 9. Since then I haven't touched the series. Tactics is my favorite of the bunch. Chrono Trigger was also pretty fun.
A game that may people forget about as well: Ogre Battle is a personal favorite.
Baldur's Gate 2: SoA, and ToB.
On the tabletop arena I started on the late end of AD&D (2nd edition). I progressed into 3.0 and 3.5, and now I play a bit of 4th edition as well.
I play L5r (legend of the 5 rings) with major amount of homebrew rules (cause their built in rules have more holes than swiss cheese).
Shadowrun, I've played on occasion.
A personal favorite here is Deadlands (Savage Worlds), which utilizes a "poker" system for spellcasting...namely, you draw 5 card hand when casting spells and your poker and determines the level of effect. Higher skills in spellcasting allows you "cheat" by drawing more cards. (in this game casting hexes is effectively trying to outwit demons, and that contest of wit takes form in a poker game)
Numerous LARP systems, some of which I wrote the rules for. Including genres for Ravenloft, L5r, and I'm currently working on a Battletech LARP to be run locally in the Spring. I also play in boffer LARPs (you run around hitting people with foam weapons rather than comparing stats to resolve combat) and I've helped write and revise rules for those as well.

My prefer DnD version is 3.5. I despise 4e, and that will be the last I mention it unless personally asked about it, and currently running a Shadowrun campaign.

I'm not fond of 4th edition. I've got no problem with the whole activated ability thing in a computer game, but it's not my thing in pen and paper.
The first computer roleplaying game I played was Baldur's Gate, and aside from that I've played Baldur's Gate II, Icewind Dale I and II, Planescape Torment, Neverwinter Nights I and II, Knights of the Old Republic I and II, Oblivion, and (obviously) Dragon Age. I keep meaning to play Fallout, but I haven't got started on it yet. I also played Guild Wars for a while, but after playing through it once I haven't really felt like touching it.

Next was Diablo, in 1996. Amazing atmosphere and setting. Diablo 2 just wasn't the same. Divine Divinity was much more satisfying than Diablo 2 from a roleplaying and single player perspective.
In 1997 I started seeing ads for Baldur's Gate in magazines. It reminded me a lot of Challenge of the Five Realms, and I finally got it in 1999. I still got the full box and manual and everything for each entry of the series and they remain my favorite games to date. BG1 is my favoritie entry.
At around the same time I also got a used copy of Might and Magic VI, which I consider to be the best RPG ever. And then there's Fallout, which I did not get until the early 00s, maybe 2001 or so. Another great RPG is Wizardry 8. I admit I missed out Planescape Torment, as well as other classics like the Ultima series.
I can't believe Ogre Battle has been mentioned. Not only is Ogre Battle 64 one of the few console RPGs I have enjoyed, it also one of the deepest strategy games out there for any platform. And no, the vast majority of computer real-time strategy (RTS) games are not real strategy games. They are actuallly tactical games. Not only is Ogre Battle 64 one of very rare true strategy game, it is also a great RPG. I doubt any game like this will be ever made again. If you have a Wii, be sure to try it...
I did play the Zelda games before all this, but as awesome as they are, I don't consider them to be RPGs. The Pokemon series is great too, but unfortunately it is associate with kids and I was too old at the time. But I consider Pokemon to be a pretty hardcore RPG, even by computer RPG standards.
