So RPGs have been my staple diet for gaming, along with the FPS. Sadly, I'm still no good at them.

Computer game wise, I started off with Might and Magic 4 & 5, before moving onto the Ultima series, then the Diablo series, the Baldur's Gate series, Icewind Dale 1&2, Neverwinter Nights 1&2, Jade Empire, Mass Effect 1, The Witcher and now Dragon Age. I'm looking forward to Mass Effect 2 being released later this month.

For PnP (in no order): various editions of D&D (my first encounter w/ it was w/ the red boxed set, not sure w/c ed. that is anymore. I don't much care for their settings anymore, tho'.), Alderac's L5R, Fading Suns (fun setting), Old World of Darkness, BRP (Call of Cthulhu & Delta Green), a session of Millennium's End, HERO (7th?), WFRP (my favourite, I think, followed by Call of Cthulhu), Decipher's LotR (only tried to run it...thing I learned: I really am more of a player than a DM/GM...), and maybe a homebrew or two.
I may have forgotten some, tho'. (I'm not sure if I ever got to play some stuff I was really interested in, like Shadowrun...)
I also played some other tabletop stuff, like Warhammer 40k, Warmachine and Battletech. (and was on the verge of trying ASL and other more 'serious' wargames...maybe I still will)
For CRPGs: I don't remember my first one, to be honest. I don't think I played any of the 'text-only' RPGs, tho'. Stuff like 'Phantasy' or the Gold Box/SSI stuff come to mind.
*edit: sigh. CGA. Them were the days... I mean, having a single floppy disk contain both the game and your saves. Now it's, what? 20+ GB per game?

Anyone remember Dark Sun: Shattered Lands and Wake of the Ravager?
Of course!
I hope sooo much, that some day some dedicated company will produce a remake.
Side note: I even remember, when I imported my party into Wake of the Ravager, that there was gold in the equipment slots of items (weapons, armour etc.) which were obsolete respectively not usuable in the sequel. Sweet, wasn't it?

I remember playing through all the original Final Fantasies before it got ported to Playstation. *shakes fist* Then just got some... 'connections' and played IV-VI on emulators and VII through IX on PC. Haven't touched X or X-2 since I heard they were travesties. XI was MMO so no. XII borrowed from friend and played through the entire Tactics series.
Then there was that Pokemon craze, still play my Platinum for that little personal achievement of finishing everything ingame before HG/SS comes out.
I'm not sure if LoZ would count as RPGs since it's more action-oriented but since people mentioned it, I'll say so as well.
Then there was Fire Emblem, Warcraft (again, RTS, not RPG), as well as the first KOTOR, Mass Effect, Super Mario RPG.
I forget which Baldur's Gate I played, but oh well. There's also a bunch of jRPGs I forget at the moment.
And of course, Dragon Age, but to be honest, I wasn't even aware DA was a RPG until I saw my friend playing it (saw the commercials though; thought it was a hack and slash); so I traded my MW2 CD for PS3 for his CD and CD key, and it was definitely worth the trade.
Edit:
Forgot to say I tried a few MMOs out. Guild Wars and its expansions, borrowed a friend's account on Everquest, was a beta tester for Dungeon and Fighter and played on a friend's WoW account when he wasn't looking.

(e.g. Ultima VII, Wizardry VII):
Am I the only person who still is annoyed when a RPG ends after 20 - 40 hours?
The examples above might be the other extremes: Ultima VII 200+ hours, W7 several months for me :innocent:

Computer rpgs- started with the DnD game. Gold'Black box games or whatever and loved them.
I've played most single player CRPGs (but no subscribe to play games) including all the NWN games + expansions, Ultima series, you name it and I've played it.
I usually prefer spell casters and rougues. My first playthrough in DA:O was as a caster mage on hard, with a party. I have a solo NM mage on hold at level 17 until the next DLC comes out. I have a solo NM two-handed Dwarf templar/champion at level 15 now. And a partied dual wield rogue at about level 10.

In early 1992, I received Final Fantasy 4 (2 in America), and thus started what I deem, the GOLDEN AGE of RPG's for myself and friends. Later that year, we got Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. In 1993, we got Secret of Mana. In 1994, we got Final Fantasy 6 (3 in America). Finally, in 1995, we got Chrono Trigger. I'll never forget this chapter of my childhood!
Sometime around 1999, my friend stumbled upon Baldur's Gate, and well, as you can imagine, my life changed. It was the first CRPG I ever played, and I proceeded to get all expansions, sequels, and even the Icewind Dale Series.
In the early 2000's, it was all about the MMO's. I played Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, Final Fantasy 11, and World of Warcraft when it first came out.
Some other highlights have been the Grandia series, Final Fantasy Tactics, Shining Force 3, Skies of Arcadia, Fable 2, Oblivion, & Lost Odyssey.
Nowadays, I like the pros and cons of all types of RPG's, so I still play a little of everything. I loved Dragon Age Origins, will be getting Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy XIII, as well as The Old Republic (my first foray into MMO's in quite some time!).

This ****hole of a game was near impossible to get anywhere, let alone level up.
Until that is i came across a begger in a city, raged and killed him, he had more gold than i had and gave XP. i spent 2 hours farming beggers and avoiding guards, everyone in the game hated me and i had to bribe them to get them to sell me gear!
After i levelled a bit i started killing townspeople and guards for cash, got some party members and moved from city to city on a rampage pillage, bought a boat and became a pirate and was the scourge of the seas.. after a weeks play i came across a temple and remembered i was supposed to be saving the world, i lol'ed.
My adventure ended when our party stumbled upon satan (no kidding) who caused my party to die instantly, it was some kind of anti-evil mechanic.
BEING EVIL NEVER FELT SO GOOD.

Well, if you are talking any type of RPG, that would be what would now be considered 1st ed. AD&D, when it first came out.
If you are asking about computer game RPG games, that depends on if you consider Zork RPG or not. If so, it would be Zork, if not, it would have to be Pool of Radiance Gold Box for the C64. But there were a few different RPG types I dl'd on qlink. They wern't anything big, but they were fun little games like Zork with DnD settings to run around in.
I have dabbled with a few different P&P RPG's, but nothing serious beyond looking at other people's copies of different rule sets. And I don't do P&P gaming anymore as it requires people who play and people having the same time to be able to play. both of which are near impossible in a very small town.
I understand why they have made the changes to the D&D rules, to make it more playable to the masses, but I prefer the more complex rules of 1st and 2nd ed.
I have played most of the major RPG and "RPG" games out for various game systems over the years since gold box games came out. I have enjoyed a good number of them, but I just don't get the enjoyment out of any of them like I did from PoR gold box.
I have played a couple of Mud's they came close to the same level of enjoyment, but those start to lack after a couple of years.
I haven't found a MMORPG that I enjoy yet, and I hate WoW, but that is mostly because I don't like the Warcraft Universe. I thought WAR would have been good, but the hardcore community just made the place unenjoyable.
Personally I would love to see a Dragonlance game made but I don't believe that will every happen. Maybe if we had todays technology back in the height of DL's popularity it would have happened.

First best RPG = Betrayal at Krondor, 1993
If you have not played BaK, it is a must. Can be found as freeware most places online.
P.S. Diablo is not a real RPG, IMO.

Ooh, Fire and Ice. I read that one, but it didn't click enough with me to make me want to read the sequels. That was years ago though, so maybe I should give them another go.
