We know that DA:I will have a larger world than DA 2 and that 'one level will be as large as all of DA II.' Typically, BioWare does fast travel between areas but will there be any option for fast travel within an area?

Will a continuous 'level' in game be represented as several spots on the map?

Hmm, depends on how big it is. Also, how would they do it? With ME they had handy things like the shuttles or elevators to simulate unseen movement, but what would they put in a middle-ages style world to indicate movement? A wagon? That would be fairly uncommon.

I'm doubtful, overall, though I suppose it is possible.

I think they'll do it like they did with DA2 and have a map that we access.

Horses!

But really, it doesn't have to represent the use of any special means of transport, just that there's no reason for the player to have to watch the character walk about.

Though I don't know if even an area "as large as all of DA II" is big enough to really require fast travel within it.

Teleportation is impossible, so sayeth the Cardinal Rules of Magic.

And I doubt any level will be enough to warrant Fast Travel.

You know there are no horses in Ferelden. Extinct.

At what point, though, does it become just silly--I mean, let's skip all walking! Teleport straight to battles, cause you know we don't really need to walk about. When does fast travel become available? Perhaps after you've fully discovered a map?

I'd simply make it possible to fast travel to any notable location that you've visited previously, as long as you aren't in a dangerous area

If it's a BIG city they can add a small list in the corner of the screen with the names of discovered merchants/NPCs and buildings.
But there might be a problem with the "event sequences". If you can stumble upon a quest by walking in the city (not by eavesdropping like in ME3) this option might become frustrating for those who'll be afraid to miss one of those. Maybe some kind of radar signal on mini map a.k.a "something is happening here". Some might say that it's "not nice" to tell us where the quests are... And so will I.

... Maybe just leave this option for main BIG city(?)

Final Fantasy XII.

Exploration plus travel from large area to large are plus travel within areas. The world design of that game was about as close to perfect as it gets.

Fast travel from everywhere defies the purpose of large, elaborate, richly detailed areas.

Fast travel between areas is fine.

A map inside a map.

World map.
City map.

I'll use DA2 as an example, since even though we are probably getting bigger worlds it'll be structured the same:

I want fast travel in the sense that I have a situation where I've cleared out a cave in the Bone Pit, and instead of walking all the way back to the beginning of the map to access the world map I can pull up a world map from my menu and then travel to another location that I've been to before.

...I hope that made sense.

I concur, the way they did it was very smart. Also the world was gorgeous.

No, I'll just end up abusing the feature and missing a ton of content like I did with oblivion.

"I'll abuse the option so I'd rather there not be an option."

I don't know how that makes any sense in this context.

The option represents a self destructive temptation, I'd rather not have? I don't see what's not to get about that.

Making the choice to click on "fast travel" is not a self-destructive problem.  Not even close.

Why do I even bother? First, you're not a qunari, quit being so literal. The problem is not "clicking on fast-travel" It's the compulsion to use it (in this case) to get around the world, likely missing out on exploration content.

If a Alcoholic told you they didn't want to be near liquor because they'd be compelled to drink, would you tell them making the choice to drink is not a self-destructive problem?

In gaming terms this is akin to meta-gaming tho meta-gaming is not quite the right word to describe the feature. It's a feature that would compel me to abuse it, therefore I'd rather not have it. If you can't understand that, then we have nothing further to say to one another, and should detract this topic no more.

As someone whose family member is a recovering alcoholic, excuse me while I do not pity your complusion to click on an option in a video game.

Instead of "fast travel," I would like to introduce the concept of "ghast travel."

This involves speedily travelling through the Deep Roads and other underground tunnels guided by a ghast companion. Sort of like Sam and Frodo being led by Gollum.

In Origins the small areas were an excuse for the lack of horses. IF the areas are larger, then we could use horses for travel, at least within the larger areas. And fast travel from one large area to the next.
