Unnamed. She says he died of a broken heart (or 'it destroyed him' or something) . You only get the dialogue if you romance her and talk to her about love after the first night.

The infamous Bioware Dead Spouses

That does not even vaguely count. They count if they're alive, not if they're backstory. Dead don't count as existing.

Bolded - Always Alive
Italized and Underlined- Can be killed due to PC actions

Shianni (CE's cousin)
Soris (CE's cousin)
Cyrion (CE's father)
Bryce and Eleanor (HN's parents)
Fergus (HN's brother)
Rica (DC's sister)
Dwarf commoner's mother (Kalah)
Bhelen (DN's brother)
Trian (DN's brother): Murdered (He is always dead, but you can kill him or just find him murdered)
Endrin (DN's father)
Alistair's 'Sister'
Morrigan's 'Mother' (always alive because Bioware says Hawke saved her in DA2)
Wynne's Son
Oghren's first wife (Branka)

Delilah Howe- Nathaniel's sister
Seranni - Velanna's sister
Felsi-  Oghren's second wife

Varania - Fenris's sister
Bartrand - Varric's brother
All of Hawke's Family (mom dies always, but one sibling can live by the end. And your uncle and cousin still breathe by Act 3)
So yeah, there are families around. And every single one is messed up. Like the real world. :P

Edit: Thanks, Kinght of Dane and Shadow of Light Dragon. Fixed Branka and Trian.

Branka doesn't always live, that's the wife mentioned Palipride47

What I think the OP wanted was a family we cane see and interact with, not a small apperance or the like.

Sadly, or hopefully, this wouldn't work well with a pc and his/her companions that's supposed to travel great distances, if we are allowed that, which I hope.
It would have worked in 2 since pc and company are always stuck in Kirkwall.

It's true many companions in Bioware games have some family but it's also true that family ties are mainly used as a plot device for something tragic. Aveline moving on and finding happiness with Wesley was a nice exception (although, she did break my Hawke's heart).

I'd like Bioware to try adding some ordinary family flavour to their games. Sure, family members die and Thedas is a cutthroat world but that doesn't mean that there isn't some lasting happiness out there.

DA2 was a bit of a missed opportunity because the whole gang of companions lived in the same city throughout the game for a long period of time. It would have made perfect sense for them to have families. It didn't help either that Hawke's family members were dropping dead like flies. Family doesn't have to be a source of problems, it can also be a safe haven or an environment to relax. That can be interesting too if it's well written.

It would be a nice change of pace if at least one of the companions would have a happy (or at least non-lethal) family life outside the whole adventuring thing. He or she could offer some new perspective in a game where most characters are bound to have an "eccentric" past.

I'm confused. Numerous companions did have loved ones that we got to meet/interact with.

Fenris had a sister. Varric had Bertrand. Alistair had Goldanna. Aveline had Wesley and Donnic. Merrill had her entire clan, let alone the Keeper. Morrigan had Flemeth. Oghren had his wife. Anders had Karl.

Trian, while he always ends up dead, can be killed directly due to the player's actions. The DN origin branches a bit in that regard; in some instances you find him pre-killed, in others you are forced to do the killing.

Nevermind that the PC having a happy, functional family goes against Bioware's playbook of creating compelling companions and PCs. *jest*

I read somewhere that Gaider avoided kids to avoid "bad parent" syndrome. I mean, if you have a child in Act 3, are you really going to go on the run with a child? What if the father is the one who destroyed the Chantry, are you going to kill your kid's dad? (not that it would even be possible lore wise. or if you were a dude, but just sayin......)

And the family falling apart was part of the storyline that involved the "rise" of the Champion. Even Cassandra suggests what happened to your sibling as motivation for whatever you did in Act 3.

But for DA3, I don't sense a happy family back home while traveling around Thedas. Especially since the non-playable background may be the reason why you are an Inquisitor, to avoid being forced to be a Chantry adherent.

I suggest no family because people always demand to romance their family members and it grosses me the hell out.

Ok, who am I missing?

I have: Carth, Aveline, Sky, Jolee, Thane, .... I can't think of any more.

The majority of party members in
Bioware games have had families that they discuss with you in varying
degrees. So...yeah.

And there's even whole missions about a few of them. Aveline has an well balanced marrage with Donnic in DA2, for example. I think BioWare handles families well. I mean they're usually just so much baggage to video game developers that they're just not there unless that family is extremely tied to the main plot. So like you said.... yeah.

Funny fact. 8/11 of those characters have some problem with their family members.

Yeah, the statistics on that are messed up.  Because 11/11 real-life people have varying degrees of problems with their family members.  Anything as complicated as family is going to generate problems.

Heck, I have problems with family and I haven't seen a one of them in person for 5+ years.

I like the idea of a companion possibly having an "Average" Family. I'm thinking too many siblings but good parents, many options available. It'd be kinda fun to sorta be adopted into somthing like that, and also the awkward conversation with one of the kids when they realize you're romantically involved with their sibling. I think it'd be a fun course of action. Unfortunatley the more characters you create the more resources you use and those resources might not be available to have such a function.

I've got 99 problems and the family is all...of them (bad joke, I should feel bad)

Honestly, it doesn't need to involve wholesale slaughter, but there needs to be some sort of messed up dynamic somewhere. Or you will think the whole family are a bunch of psychopath serial killers

(which would qualify as a family "dysfunction" so back to sqaure one!)
