But none of them have tried to kill me . . . yet.
Well, in some playthroughs, both Wynne and Lelianna tried to kill me at the Ashes (I wanted the achievement, so got it and reloaded.)
Sten can try to kill you at Haven, too.
The only ones who have no opportunity to kill you are Alistair, Morrigan, Dog and Oghren (at least I can't think of an instance where any of them can). Even from a character perspective, letting Zevran live is minor. But once you forgive him for the way you two met, he DOES NOT TURN FROM YOU if you at least talk to the guy. Me, I always play a good character. Everyone except Loghain gets a second chance.
Yes. Strangely enough, almost all of your companions will try to kill or betray you for personal reasons. Zevran is, surprisingly, the most loyal, and when his "crisis point" comes up, whether he stays or goes, attacks or defends, is based simply on how decently you treated him until that point. Give him a couple of presents and talk to him once in a while, and you need not worry.
And even not playing good, Loghain still dies. A different scenario. Zevran's assassination attempt was nothing personal. He didn't know me from eve, he was simply doing a job he had been contracted to perform. He had nothing against the Wardens, wasn't after you for any alterior motive. Just business. Later on, you find out, even then, he really didn't expect to kill you, and was more likely hoping you would waste him instead, freeing him from the crows and his guilt. Loghain, however, it was personal, and the bugger was doing alot more than just trying kill me for paranoid skitzo reasons. He was basically monkey wrenching my works and had made, in the case of redcliffe and The Circle, alot of unecessary work and suffering, furhter weakening my attempts to get to the business of the blight. Thus, killing him became a major mission priority.
But Zev? No. In all my playthroughs, I found justifiable excuses to spare him and make use of him, whether philanthropic or pragmatic. And, it's nice to have another rogue in the party, as Leliana was of little use to me, and I found the bardic skill tree useless. If I'm playing a rogue, it doesn't matter as much, but non-rogue, Zevran's assassin abilities are far more deadly and useful, and he becomes a combo of damage dealer and trap/lock destroyer. I just use the respec mod to put some lock picking skill into him, and voila. best rogue in game.
i could respec leliana, but really, another major reason to have Zev around is his banter and dialogue alone.
