Even though they [Bioware] haven't announced the platforms, I would think it would be out on the PS3/360 because of the save-import feature.

Also, IIRC, there was an anonymous survey among game studios a few months ago. 60% said they won't be developing a game for this generation in after 2013. So it's safe to assume that the likelihood of it releasing on these consoles is still a strong possibility.

What are your thoughts?

It could be on both?

We've received next to no information about next-gen consoles, with the exception of the WiiU. I suspect very strongly that DA3 will be on the current generation of consoles.

Interesting to see if it would be ported to WiiU if there isn't a new console generation out by then that vastly outstrips it in performance.

Could be a Zelda Twilight Princess scenario. Seeing how long dao took and how much time they spent on da2, setting their release date for next gen wouldn't be a bad idea considering they're coming out in the next 1-2 years.

Very probable. After all, Mass Effect 3 will be release on Wii U as well. I'm guessing DA3 will be released on all current generation consoles (plus Wii U, which is really more of an inbetweener or a unique case than a next gen console) and, of course, on PC.

According to who? Sony and Microsoft have both stressed a "ten-year plan" for their current home consoles, which would suggest that this generation has another 2-3 years in it at least.

Devs wouldn't be entering the transition period yet if that were the case, but its clear many are which means the next consoles should be releasing in the next 1-2 years max.

And the 10 year cycle was never about waiting 10 years until their next console release, only that they would continue to support the current one for that long.  Same thing happened with PS2 and currently is with the DS.

I'd bet current gen. I'm not in the know but the next gen hardware's still a few years out, right? DA3's coming out next year, right?

At the very least next gen doesn't start next year. Otherwise we'd know what the next gen consoles are named and there'd be advertisements for them all over the place.

It would probably be this generation, as an easier way to import your saved game and history onto the next game. This is probably why EA is putting time constraints on making these games. The Wii U, also most likely.

Just my opinion, though.

No there wouldn't.  Ads wouldn't start until weeks, maybe sparsely months before.

Its very very possible that they announce the hardware less then a year before release.  Its possible they even announce it later this year, like at the VGAs or something popular.

Most companies don't announce hardware years before its ready, just look at apple.  Its a silly and rather pointless practice that if anything probably just harms sales of the current hardware.  If I were Microsoft (or Sony whatever) I wouldn't announce the next console until the E3 before it releases.  Thats plenty of time to build hype with minimal impact to the current system.

The 360 was announced on May 12, 2005 and came out November 22, 2005.

I withdraw my statement.

DA3 is mostly likely being released next November (2013) just before Thanksgiving and Black Friday. (In the USA, at least.) Black Friday kicks off the Christmas season and it's the biggest shopping day of the year. Bioware would make the most money around then. That's what Bethesda did when they released Skyrim to the U.S. in 2011. (It was on Nov 11th - not long before the holidays). Bioware would be smart to release it mid Nov 2013, making the most profits at that time of year.

Anyway... my point being, the 720 won't be out by then. I assume DA3 will be on the 360.

It would depend on when Sony and Microsoft decide to announce their new consoles, if significant development time has already passed before EA/BioWare are given what they need to build the game, I can see it staying back on previous hardware. Especially since they might lose sales with people unable to find or afford a new console. The other thing is that both Sony and Microsoft will need to announce at the same time or they will still develop for the least powerful platform.

I wish it were not so but Da3 will be released on the xbox 720 and ps4.

EA is developing now for the 720

I had hoped this would be released on the 360 along with saints row 4 so I wouldn't have to buy a 720 but alas, it seems fate has forced my hand.Best to start planning on getting a new gen console now guise.

That article reference spending in EA's Research & Development department. Anything they're working on in there is ages away from being announced.

I wonder if they could design it for both. Most consoles are backwards compatible, you can run OG xbox games on a 360, etc. They're also making a PC version, and whatever bells and whistles get added to the next gen consoles, they aren't going to be any better (or even different) from what PCs can do. So they could probably develop the game for current consoles, but include some of the graphical options that would be available on PC (assuming they at least have the specs for the new consoles) and automatically enable them if it's being run on a rig that can handle it.

My prediction is a Q4 2013 release, only available for PC, PS4, Wii-U and Xbox720. If the PS4 is delayed until 2014, my guess is there would still be no PS3 version. I'd be pretty surprised if the 720 is delayed beyond 2013.

Isn't the point to help drive sales of the new consoles? I agree that it shouldn't be that challenging to make an older gen version, but I'd imagine console manufacturers are pressuring publishers for lots of next gen launch titles. I suspect there will be very few current gen console titles releasing from the end of 2013 onward.

The consoles are going to be so expensive at launch, the availability of game titles will be important to drive the hardware sales. Might even increase the MSRP of game titles.

Next Gen Xbox is rumoured for 2014, Next Gen PS3 is not until 2016 at the earliest.

DA3 is out at the earliest by the end of 2013. So this gen.

There are plenty of rumors but no official announcements, of course. They will delay announcing anything as long as possible, as such an announcement will hurt sales of current gen hardware. Perhaps you may be familiar with other rumors, but the reports I've seen mentioned the end of 2013 as their target.

Many developers have already been working on next gen games for more than a year, publicly hiring "next gen" programmers and designers, etc. There is already at least one next gen game which looks quite far advanced, judging by the E3 gameplay footage (Star Wars 1313).

EA also announced earlier this year during a conference call with investors that it will be spending $80 million on production costs of next gen games during the period from May 2012 - April 2013. Perhaps part of those funds have been allocated toward DA3.

Not to mention that the import data you may or may not have will be on your current-generation console. Also, let us not forget that the install base for current-generation consoles is quite high. Certainly higher than the next-generation console install base, which is infact, zero. Posted Image

Microsoft/Sony make the consoles, EA makes the games. MS/Sony apparently lose money when they sell a console, but make it back on licensing fees from the companies that release games for their systems. If it were purely up to MS/Sony, I'm sure they'd be happy to make this generation of consoles last forever, and just sit back and make money from those licensing fees. They're in competition with each other though, and with PCs to some extent, so they've got to keep pushing things forward (grudgingly - seriously, what other industry has been stuck using the same exact tech for 7 years?) Making the game work for more platforms would maximize game sales, something EA definitely wants, and something MS/Sony benefit from as well.
