This is happening to me with a 3850 (its funny cause thats the recomended card) Starting new games works I can even play through ostagar for a while. My first character i played in one sitting and got all the way through ostagar. I then started each origin just for fun and saved tehm all at ostagar when i tried to load up one of these the next day to continue as a main i get teh black screen of death. So I restarted a new character and got to play for a while in ostagar saved and came back the next day with the same problem.

There is an simple explenation for that really.

The visiontek HD OC 3870 comes with overclocked as a stock. Depending on the brand, some of them slighty overlclock the cards to boost performance. Sapphire, delivers there own stock which is, in most cases not Oced.

A lot of problems in games arise from videocards that are slightly oced. That is why experienced users, sometimes recommend to lower the values of your videocard. Switching for a different card is basicly the same thing.

P.s. I am a builder due to the group specifications, that ive set to builder for the Toolkit and mod community. I do not work for tech support or bioware :)

I'm not familiar at all about this. Has anyone tried the underclocking of the video card?

**Accidental duplicate**
This social network is still pretty buggy.  Messages I type doesn't seem to show up in the thread after you submit it.

you crashed to desktop or you have a 'black screen need a hard reset' crash?

I believe all of us here are experiencing the latter. If you're experiencing the same thing as us and solve it, then it could be great news. But it'll be a pity to play such a great game in crappy graphics...

Crash to desktop, no hard resets or blue / black screen. Afterwards I can't do anything anymore, the whole system freezes then when I try to start an other program or the game again. Only thing to do then is a reboot.

I've been playing with an ATI 4870x2 on Vista x64 using the 9.10 drivers and havent had a problem yet. (Lv 11, even though my profile here won't update)

Can't be all ATI cards then if mine works fine after 20+ hours. Still, I sympathize.

A few tips that may help, do in this order;

- latest video, motherboard/chipset and sound drivers.

- if you are OCing put back to factory defaults

- lower to med settings and use native res for your monitor

- turn off/exit anti virus and any other non-needed app in the background

- run disk cleanup, manually clear out your profile temp folder and then defrag

- try again

If it still hangs/CtD then clearly its a hardware/software compatibility issue.

For the record my system and it runs fine on max settings:

I am having a similar problem except that it keeps me from
booting the computer!

I had a weird graphics crash after 3 hours of play yesterday in an area with a
bunch of enemies causing lag. It froze up and I had to turn my laptop off. I
restarted and launched the game again, it loaded me right into the same battle
and I immediately lowered the graphic settings to reduce strain. I had the same
crash after 2 minutes. I left it off for a few hours to cool down and started
the computer up again later but while loading up it I got the “your computer
was not shut down properly… choose safe mode or boot regularly”. I booted regularly
but the screen showed weird lines of lights fading to black and would not
respond. I hard restarted again only to get the same lights fading to black
before any other options.

I can’t load with Vista or XP boot discs in the drive or get into BIOS and I
can’t use my computer at all. PLEASE HELP!

HP Pavillion Laptop. Core 2 duo 1.7
VIsta 32
Nvidia 8700gt I think

I would hazard a guess that your GPU has failed and needs a replacement :'( warranty it up!

That's what I was thinking too and I was about to give up on it when I tried getting a signal on my tv via a hdmi connection. For some reason connecting the hdmi cable allowed me to get to startup repair mode and then I updated the graphics driver and it seems to be working. I guess I was just lucky trying the hdmi.

I'm not sure I am willing to test it again by starting DA:O again. Who knows if the driver update will make the game stable.

I had problems with graphics and sound (ATI card) until I updated the Microsoft Visual C ++ runtime library and installed Service Pack 1 for the same...now works perfectly with no crashing, stuttering or other glitches:

Service pack 1:

Hope this helps someone as it sorted me out after hours of downloading video drivers, trying different resolutions, different ATI Catalyst versions etc etc;)

I have a GeForce 8800GTS 320mb 320bit and the game crashes like every 30minutes... Could it be because of the card's overheating?

Got a Radeon 3870 and it works great in all the "human" areas but when I try to move on to the other areas the screen goes black and says "No signal" and I have to restart the computer manually since everything locks up.

Downloaded the newest drivers for everything in my computer and I still got the same problems.

Ah I also have the infamous ATi 3870 no problems for well over a year until now. As others have noted, no problems with any other game, so I do not believe it is the gpu itself. It is not overheating, no problem with programs running in the background.

The difference for me is it seems like I have made it much farther than everyone else here. I had played 40 hours before the instant crashes began today. Could be a cpu (AMD 5000+ dual core) problem, but that is not overheating either. I have not tried the patch yet, but I keep seeing that there are problems with that as well.

Ive had a "sort of solution". Others have posted about it, but I'll carry on.

I finally got wardens keep to show, with a new toon, went to soldiers peak - crash!! Reset PC, started game, loaded, tried again crash - x 2 more times.

So I tried the suggestion of using earlier gpu drivers, 9.6 I tried. That got me through the first bit. Inside area have been no problem. As soon as I left the building - crash. Reset - reloaded. Tried setting core affinity to use a single core, (AMD 64x2 5200+), and managed to complete the area. So who knows, if you've not tried it yet, it may work.

Of course, as soon as I left, I set the affinity back to both cores, but it seemed to work.

3870 btw

I have spent 12 hours trying to overcome these issues, even completely replaced the operating system, and im dumbfounded to say the least... I'm having similar graphics issues as you guys have already mentioned, so not starting a new post. My Box is a Vista Home premium, Gfx card ATI Radeon 4870 (Now I remember why I was always buying NVidia cards), 4 gig of memory etc etc , very sad not to be able to continue, but the lag is just horrendous... hope the guys found a solution soon :)
