I did the following and its been running for 20 mins without a crash, where it used to die after 10 seconds.
1. Use the daorigins.exe found in the "Dragon Age/bin_ship/" directory only. Do not use the launcher
2. Open properties for daorigins.exe.
3. Set Compatibility to Windows XP Service pack TWO...make sure it is two and NOT pack three!
4 Tick the box "Run this program as an Admimistrator"
5. run daorigins, exe, go to options
6. Set Graphics to HIGH. Have not confirmed if it works on Very High yet.
7. Turn Anti Aliasing OFF
8. Load a save game made by you.
9. Immediately hit F5 Quicksave
10. Immediately hit F9 Quickload.
Though honestly i think the only steps you NEEED to do is 6-10
Saves need to be loaded twice for some odd reason

Glad that fixed it for you Jam. I thought it would work for me as well considering i got past that dialouge without crashing (i was also spamming 1/esc) Then i froze in the battle cinematic right after lol...

So far it just works running around Ostagar. I haven't tried to go into the wilds yet.

Wow Jam good call!
I tried your double load idea and it seems to have worked. I was able to play for about an hour without a crash, weird.

did ANY of you even try setting the cpu affinity to the last cpu thread? worth a shot.Tamanous73 wrote...
The game is running fine through Castle Cousland, pretty smooth and very nice. When I move onto Ostagar and after I go through the initial chat and I am free to move about the area, the game crashes, or should I say my computer crashes and reboots. I have tried new drivers, old drivers, lowering settings and reinstalling, without any luck. Odd though I can go through Castle Cousland with all different types of characters, but cannot really do anything in Ostagar.
Any suggestions?

I recently stumbled upon another odd quirk that i think is helping, though i cant be sure.
I am still using the double load save trick, but i also used to run the game in 16:9. It never occurred to me to change it because i am using a wide screen monitor.
On a whim i changed the aspect to 4:3, and it seems to help quite a bit, and still looks pretty much the same.
I still think the saves in certain areas are the culprit. Why else coild i play from Origins and beyond in one sitting, only to have a crash after saving?
I also have been using wait for vertical refresh, though i don't think it matters.
I have been able to get away with 2X Anti- Aliasing using the 4:3 ratio, where before it was instant death.
Hope theese help.

Found another surefire way to stop the crashing on my Radeon 3870.
The best fix i have found so far is to the following..
1. Download Riva Tuner Version 2.24 (do google search..its free)
2. Click on Customize, Low Level System Settings
3. Lower Core clock 50 points example: 800 down to 750
4. Lower Memory Clock 50-70 points. example: 1170 down to 1095
Has worked flawlessly for me. Though i'm not sure if its totally safe. Can't imagine it doing any harm to underclock.
You may have to experiment with the settings. Should be around 10 to 15 percent underclock.
Edit: And yes, it works for both Nvidia and ATI

Great research Jam, I have not had any problems playing since I have been doing the double load. I will try your other suggestions for fun and to possibly help out others.

I've tried this...keep crashing to desktop. 1 core, 2 cores...doesn't matter. This game is the WORST, MOST CRASHING game I have ever played. And, the sad thing is, I still like it enough to keep steppoing through the game with crashes on average every 10 minutes or so.
