I'm using the auto level up and got a shield spell which I cast. This took a mana hit and the shield has been lasting for a long long time. I tried to restore the missing mana but it made no difference--still off a little from full. How long does the shield last for anyway--it doesn't say? I don't suppose that the mana level is stuck a little low and I have an unlimited amount there? That would be 'convenient'.

Spell Shield is a sustained spell. It stays up constantly unless you run out of mana. When a spell hits the SS it has a 75% chance of being absorbedf into the shield. So damage goes to your mana rather than to your health in that case.

Thanks regarding the Spell Shield. So there is no way to turn them off if you maybe use the wrong one or no longer need them? I think this includes, so far, Arcane Shield, Shield Cover, and Rapid Shot.
My biggest problem really remains the Tactics. I can't get the Mage to heal the party up when someone's health gets low. And fighter eats up a lot of lesser health potions. But at least we don't get tired and have to sleep and/or eat...so far.
I'm done for the night. The party is just entering Lothering...

Whatever sustained abilities you have active are glowing on your hotbar. Click on whatever you want to turn off and it will turn off. There will then be a short cool down time before you can turn it on again.
Did you set you tactics for each of your characters? For example, set Wynn to heal party members when less than 50% health? (or whatever level you want her to heal at.) Also, I don't hink the healer will ever cast group heal unless your order her to.
When I play with a party I don't have anyone drink potions automatically. I use pause and order them to drink a potion when I want them to. That saves on potions.

Try "Companion - Health below 50% - Heal".
IMPORTANT: Be sure to place the healing tactics in the TOP spot. That's the tactic with the highest priority. If the condition is not fulfilled (because none of your companions is hurt bellow 50% health) or the action can't be performed (beacuse you lack the mana to cast the spell or the spell is on cooldown) the tactics line will be skipped. hen the program checks the condition of the second line and either performes the action if the condition is fulfilled or skips it again to the third line and so on.
This condition checking happens constantly and as soon as an condition is fulfilled and the action performed, IT STATR OVER AT THE BEGINNING. So if you happen to have a condition that's always fulfilled (like attacking any enemy in sight) in a high spot, the lower tactics will NEVER be activated.
Long story short: Whatever your characters should do primarily NEEDS to be in the upper tactic slots. The lower ones are for actions that should only be performed if your character has nothing better to do.
Hope that clears tings up. you can also read more about the mechanics here.

BlackVader is completely correct, you probably have your heal order set too low in priority. Put in a order at the top for your mage to heal herself at 50%, then I like to put below that a second one to use the weakest health potion if health is below 25%. This way if the character cannot heal it has a fallback tactic. Next should be an order to heal allies if their health falls below a certain percentage, 50-75% is good. Your allies should have an order at the top of their tactics list to use a healing potion (for warriors, I usually specify a normal one) if their health falls below 25%.
