Only atlases/brutes/phantoms/scions/praetorians have to melee you. Phantoms don't even have to do the full animation, even if she starts her animation and you cancel it, she is still primed.
Banshees can insta kill you if they have that glowing field around them.
The boss units are supposed to have to melee you first before they can sync kill right?

They can sync kill while they get staggered. Charge, phantom staggers, i press heavy melee before she can recover from dizziness, BUT cuz of some magic, i got stabbed before i touched her. You just have to be dodge/roll away somehow if she hit you with her sword, because its followed by a sync-kill always if you didnt died.

For turian havoc/ghost using stim, to avoid being sync-killed. Didnt tested yet, but in invulnerability states if you get killed, you stand up. Such as you get revived and after for a few seconds you get invulnerable, against sync-kill. Tested.

Only Banshees can sync-kill w/o melee - they have a probabilit of going for either melee or sync once they get into range.
The rest need to melee first, but not necessarily you. A phantom hacks your mate down, you run up to revive, she instas you.
