I sometimes hold back joining when there are multiple people escorting and I feel I can better help by keeping the pathway to the destination cleared of some bad guys. Everyone being in the small circle around a drone is sometimes just as bad as everyone all running to be in the extraction zone the minute the last wave starts.

BAD IDEA. You end up being stuck in a tiny spot fighting off all the worst the enemy has to throw at you with bad results (eating up your health/life resurrections) or ending up as a lone survivor if you are lucky.

Two or three is plenty for escort provided the players NOT escorting are backing them up by clearing the path. Dragoons, Phantoms, etc, are nicer in small amounts rather than all at once.

I agree with this guy though. It just depends on the map and enemies.  The map that has acid rain, you need someone that heals shields fast on the escort missions.
