In both DA and DA2, companions got traits based on how well they got on or didn't get on with the PC. Like Alistair got +2/4/6/8 con, Merrill got +10% dmg resistance if she was a rival.
But what about each companion gaining a unique skill tree depending on the PCs and that companions choices? Like taking option A in the companions quest will allow them to learn Unique Skill Tree A or taking Option B will alllow them to learn Unique Skill Tree B.
And some of the skills would be different still, depending on the PCs and Companions relationship and the PCs class.
Can we look forward to being able to further customize/devlope our companions based on the paths they and the PC take during the game?

I like the idea of having more than two potential buffs for the companions.

And would the companions be able to use their skills at particular plot points in the story, based on who we have with us at the time?
