I played the first 2 games, am in limbo about the third because of how annoyed I was with the 2nd but I suppose I may change my mind since I loved the first

why was the 2nd not a sequal? I remember the dlc ending in a cliffhanger, yet when I turned on the 2nd, I just got a totally new game pretty much

I just wanted to know if a reason was given for this?

Which DLC ended in a cliffhanger? I think Origins was a pretty well rounded story, and while they kept a little bit of ambiguity, there was no need for a sequel that directly continues it.
Bioware stated somewhere that the changes of Thedas during the Dragon Age would be the focus of the series (or something like that), not the journey of a single character. I think that's a fine idea. If you create such a detailed world, it would be a waste to only ever see it through the eyes of one person.

As sad as it is to admit it, DAII was either a money grab or simply a development time denial featured by EA.
It seems it was planned to be a sequel originally, but that never happened.

IIRC, Bioware stated that each game was a stand alone story, with new locations, and new characters. That being said, I think there were some comments about characters from previous games possibly being npcs, or just having cameo appearances, but that each game wouldn't be a continuation of the previous game.  So, sad as I am that I won't be seeing my Hawke, or my LI in the next game, I'm looking forward to it, and hoping it's as epic as Origins was.

I don't think it counts as a cliffhanger if noone's life is in imminent danger. And as we have no clue what Morrigan revealed, it's not even a "sequel hook". The Warden cleary is doing something, and this something might bring him back in some capacity, but that's about it. I don't think it requires immidiaty resolution.

No, it's defintely a cliff-hanger. It's an unfinished story.

If the ritual was taken out of Origins, and it ended where it ended (or at the end of Awakenings, or the end of Golemns), it would be a complete story. The Warden's done his story and settles down. All the other characters settle down, or leave to culminate their own, personal, stories (in some cases, the outcome of this is even given in the prolouge).
These characters could be camoed in later installments, but as far as OUR expierence goes, their story is done.

The ritual and Witch Hunt changed this. The ritual created more story out of the main plot line, left mysterious unsolved pertaining to Morrigan, Flemeth and the Archdemon. Witch Hunt left continued the main plot line of Origins, leaving our Warden NOT settled down or on a private adventure, but off to continue an important storyline.

Which was not, and probably won't be, continued.

That's not justifiable.

It's why Dragon Age 2's plot line was confusing. It's why people are fighting so much for the return of the Warden. It's why Morrigan being shelved is such a problem.

If EA-bioware wanted to end the story of the Warden and move onto different stories within the Universe, they should have not included the ritual or released Witch Hunt. Or, left the ritual in, and made Witch Hunt the culimnationof the Morrigan/Flemeth/Archdemon/Ritual storyline, and with it, the Warden's story.

If you really don't think it's a cliffhanger, what was in the book Morrigan left to the Warden?
