I kind hope the hunger got to him before the darkspawn did, seems more merciful.

Most people assumed. I mean, the guy had gone weeks without food or water, had no key to his cage and no weapon to fight with. Sten is awesome, but I find it hard to imagine he could fend off a darkspawn horde.

More importantly, he stays in his cage because he wants to die.

Well, maybe a darkspawn horde to the face changes perspective,

Or maybe the revered mother decided at the last second (more likely, that templar guy, Ser Bryant - I think) to not be a b*tch and said "I'll let you out if you help people escape."

The sword thing can't be explained that well though.

The sword can be explained. Sten (after saving people in Lothering) hunted until he found the person who had the sword be it Dwyn or anyone who may have pick it up if Dwyn died at Reddcliffe. If Dwyn died he broke into Dwyn's home and took it. If Dwyn or whoever were persuaded to part company with the sword.

I think Bioware said the comics were "one possible canon."

But how would he find the scavenger at Lake Calenhad? Or go to Orzammar (traveling the Forstback mountains in the cold with his plainclothes), then Redcliffe?

But I guess he'd actually go after his soul (essence, identity, whatever) a bit more aggressively than I would look for my crappy headphones or a missing pen.

He just seemed so self-defeating when you do his personal quest.

The Sten of the comics is a Sten who was let out of his cage and accompanied Alistair and the Warden throughout the game.

If that's what happened in your game, great. If you left Sten in his cage in Lothering, then he was brutally murdered by darkspawn. End of story.

Never saw him die :P

Seriously, they really do have some leeway with that.

The comics are cannon only if your choices have Thedas in the same state the comics do.

So, my "cannon" playthrough has Alistair on the throne, Sten alive, and the Arishok dead, so there's nothing from the comics conflicting with my cannon. Thus, the events of the comics are probably cannon to that playthrough.

I have another playthrough where Alistair is dead, the Arishok is alive, and I honestly don't remember what happened to Sten. For that playthrough, the only value the comics have is they are slowly revealing what happened to Maric - everything that happened to him still happened in that world, since my choices have no effect on the past. Just no one's discovering it.

So, the only way I see the comics impacting DA3 or a future games, is really if Maric or another character who appeared in the comics shows up - they'll probably recap all the info you need to know as well, for those who didn't read the comics. If your cannon aligns with the comics, perhaps they'll even mention that as to how they figured out Maric was alive or something - if not, there will be another explanation.

And Sten should be Arishok in the next game, if Sten's alive in your cannon and the Arishok died. Otherwise, you may have the Arishok from DA2, or a completely new one.

Definitely more than with Leliana

I'm not even talking about the generic head-removed-from-body VFX which is randomly generated (she can take an arrow to the chest and go down too). I'm talking about the people who killed her back at camp. Being next to the Urn of Sacred Ashes (which heal anyone and everyone) could potentially explain a miraculous recovery.

Anders has no room to be a Grey Warden though.
