need some advise here
this is my PC
Microsoft XP SP3
AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-core processor
2.21 GHz, 2.50 GB of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS
can my machine take DAO? or should I go for the PS3 version safe with quality and performance? the thing is that this game is clearly meant to be played in a PC, but I dont want to pay 49.95 to later regret it.
PC or PS3?

you need more ram
im running about the same PC but 4 GB ram and and ATI 4850 HD and i went with the Xbox version but go PS3 would be a better go for you.
Also nothing you can do you will buy one want it for the other...PC is always the best verison of all but if your PC is lacking the hardware to run it right, go the next best option in PS3

If you can/have the resources to upgrade your card, do so. The game would run well on your PC (significantly better than on a PS3). With your current card/setup, I'd agree that PS3 is a better bet.

This is the card I'm using and it runs quite smoothly with everything maxed at 2x AA.
Only about $120

very interesting answers, indeed with my current setup I will be left lacking in the graphic department. but what about game play? I heard that several battles in the PC version are more enjoyable and more challenging than in the console version, how much of that is true? though I do enjoy good graphics or a nice art style, for me gameplay is second to none.

I buy most games for consoles (I have a 360 and PS3, and I particularly love my 360) but I upgraded my card specifically for this game. I can't imagine playing it on a console now that I've played it on PC.* That's my particular preference though, and it has a lot to do with my RTS background (and BG, etc). If you've tried an RTS or party-based RPG on a console and hated it, definitely go with PC. If you've tried and didn't mind, or if you have no strong preference, I'd go with whichever you're more inherently comfortable with.
*I played KotOR on a console and loved it. Same with ME1 (and I just preordered ME2 for 360). To me DA:O is sufficiently micromanaging-oriented that it makes more sense on a PC, but it probably works fine on a console if you're willing to play KotOR-style.

Ram and graphics card (in that order) is your limiting factor. The PS3 version has framerate issues I know (because the graphics are pushed fairly hard) whereas the 360 version has blurrier lower-res textures, but has a higher framerate. Nice thing about a PC is YOU get to decide which you live with, or if your system is good enough, both work fine.

I have the PS3 version, and I'm having a blast with it. BUT KEEP IN MIND that both console versions do NOT have the ability to "zoom out" into a Baldur's Gate style viewing angle.. and the gameplay is more based on setting up your allies AI to do what you want, and controlling one of the 4 directly while you fight.
You also don't pause nearly as much on the console version, because you let the AI take control of the other 3 characters most of the time.
There's far less "tactics" in the console version, it's much more "actiony" (is that a word? lol). Because you only pause to line up spells, select targets to heal, or as a knee jerk "oh #@$#@" reaction to fix an issue before a player dies.
