So I just unlocked this 3 foot death machine and I have a few questions about his abilities and some possible build stratagies. So far my method of playing him is to spam recon mines wherever/whenever and trying to get a group of mobs destroyed and it's been working pretty good so far. I've also been using the shield recharge ability where it seems appropriate. As far as the shield recharge goes I'm wondering whats better at the rank 4+ levels. At 4 I can't decide if shields or impact radius is the better choice. It seems like I'm already maxing my own shields without the added bonus of lvl4 shields but I don't know what's happening to my teammates shields. I'm also not sure what to take at lvl 5 and 6.
It seems like racon mine is the real damage dealer with this class but I also can't deny the effectiveness of prox. mine, especially since they recharge so fast. In most of my builds I always abandon one skill so I can max the others but with this class I'm wondering if prox. mine is the one I should dump or should I try to balance bothe mines and shave some points elsewhere?
And finally I have a question about cover, can the volus go into cover because so far I'm not able to? I've only played a few rounds with him and I've experienced a bug a few times in the past where I couln't drop into cover. I'm wondering which on it is with this character.

You are better off asking these questions in the multiplayer forum. The one question I can answer with certainty is that the Volus cannot dock into cover.

Volus can't into cover.

Volus are support characters first and foremost. Engineer specifically is the debuffer. Make sure you have the damage taken properties on both of his mines. For shield recharge you want radius, since no one ever stands still and its easier to heal everyone with, and the 50% DR is manditory. Cooldowns are CRITICAL on him so low cooldown and recharge speed on his powers are recommended.

The radius can be helpful but its more often the case that you will benefit from the extra shields.

you'll have to get good with using soft cover, that's peaking around corners without actually touching them

I have to disagree with the Walrus. 6/6/6/6/0. Melee damage bonus? You can't melee!

Take blast radius and increased damage on your scan mine. That's your main weapon by a mile. Proxy mine is okay, throw it in the same place as the scan mine or use it to watch your back. The scan mine blows through walls, so the best place to put it is where the enemies are spawning. It will 1-shot any mook, and 2-shot the more minor bosses like brutes.

I use a locust with ArP and weight reduction to keep my recharge at +200%. The gun rarely if ever gets fired, but when it does the accuracy at range is super helpful. Acolyte is good, too, if you have it high enough that you can still get 200% recharge.

Use shield boost if you get hit (at all), or after reviving a teammate. In the case of having a sentinel on your team, just follow him spamming shield boost. You won't get any points, but he'll be an unstoppable death machine.

Like it was said, Volus are support characters. Playing them like you do with offensive classes will only lead you to your own demise. Your role is more or less of a medic, and no matter what people say that is what the Volus were created for in the Mass Effect Multiplayer. However the Volus Engineer can be more offensive than the Volus Adept.

• Volus can't cover, it's a trait BioWare added to balance the race. You have to use your small size in your advantage. They can do pseudo-covers by using the Heavy Melee, since they go into a ducking motion, which can be used to hide behind small obstacles in some stages.

• Recon Mine should be leveled for Radius (Level 4) and Invasive Scan (Level 5), and placed at chokepoints and areas of high traffic, so enemies take increased damage (+25%) and reduced movement speed (-30%). Don't detonate it unless really necessary, like blowing Possessed Abominations and other dangerous foot soldiers like Geth Hunters and Phantoms.

• Leveling Proximity Mine for Damage Taken (Level 4) will make it stack with Recon Mine's Invasive Scan, giving a bonus of +45% damage taken to the enemies.

• Invest on Power Damage and stick with light weapons to keep the cooldown at 200% or near it. I recommend the Acolyte or the Scorpion, and maybe the Locust or N7 Hurricane as secondary weapon.

I made a Volus guide, check my signature below if you're interested. I'm not a pro at this game, but at least the Volus is something I really invested on. =)

The idea that a volus engineer is only good for being a medic or shield generator is crazy. I rock a Typhoon X on my volgee. I toss the recon mind into a corridor or a spawn point, then smoosh my nose up against cover that I can shoot through. After that, I just point my Typhoon at the red wigglies and let 'er rip.

Works real real nice.

Interesting.  I never thought of using a typhoon on him.  Not a bad idea at all.

Try it!  You'll like it.  If the spawn starts to get out of hand, detonate your recon mine, pump your shields, and fly away on a biotic wind.
