I'm no purist by any means. Skyrim has all sorts of weird mods to try and make the game more interesting for me after having finished it once, and I'm playing around with some texmods in 3. But MEHEM is clearly the best mod I've come across, pretty much saved the ME universe for me. And if it works out, I may even try and play the Citadel DLC after the ending, and end the trilogy with the partying.

And again MrFob, I could thank you endlessly for taking as much time and energy as you have for making this.

Those scenes would work well with the sense you might lose your love and what you care about.

It would require a bit of dialog editing with Shepard, but that wouldn't be terrible.

The harder part would be the import of the model and if it lined up well with the animations.


I actually like those nightmare scenes, but I always thought it would have been cooler if during the final sequence, Shepard comes up to the kid... while he is hugging whoever was left behind on Virmire. 

...and then they burn together. 


But let's say you left behind Ashley... if Ashley were to return for the nightmare scenes, then it would have to be Bun-head Ashley with Phoneix armor.

I'm not so sure that's possible. 

I mean, the whole purpose of the kid is to give all Shepards a universal focus.  I don't know how feasible it would be to create a variable image in the dreams. Not to mention what if SHepard romanced no one?

In addition, I don't know how it would look to replace a child's form with an adult.  How would it look while moving, and so on?

If I were to change it, I'd probably remove the child entirely, and have SHepard wander alone in teh woods with nothing but the whispers of the dead in all the dreams.

See, Shepard having nightmares about THAT would be good, for one thing. We know SHepard has nightmares about those visions. It was established in ME by Chakwas and Shepard aftert he beacon, yet these visions, which are scary as hell are dropped... Just why?

Feasible. Fob has already edited the sequences in MEHEM, you could just link to the bink of the prothean warning instead.

Wait, but isn't the problem with editing the kid nightmares that it's technically still a gameplay sequence?  It's not just a movie that plays, you control Shepard's movement and stuff in the nightmares.  Or am I just being dense?

Sort of a bizarre question - does anyone remember parts of ME2 or ME3 where Tali says the word "Shepard" in a calm, normal tone of voice that's sort of in a emphasized way? Like a greeting or maybe a flirt?

I'm going through clips and most of the ones I find are scared, afraid, emotional, danger, etc. or inappropriate emotion. Or ones that run together that would sound like "Shepardhdmhgbffff" if I cut it out.

Not really sure where to look, I have one good suggestion that might work, but it's a little bit iffy.

About the nightmares: Replacing the kid is difficult because of the animations (as has been stated). Replacing the whole sequence with a bink video is also difficult. I think I know enough about sequences by now to do it though. I had to look into matinee sequences a whole lot on the weekend and theoretically, they could be reproduced and put in place. It would require a tremendous effort though. Not something I want to do in the near future to be honest.

@wavion::lol:, kind of reminds me of the after credit scenes in the "Curse of the Caribbean" movies.

Hmm, I have to admit, getting rid of the damn kid would be quite good indeed, but also tricky as hell. Also honestly with all the crap Shepard has to endure I'd honestly imagine that it would be more fitting if each time there's a different character showing up. Like, well, the fist time is still the kid, as symbol of all the innocents he failed/wasn't possible for him to save, the second time the Virmire Casualty, since also it's the one he's thinking about in the dialogue right after he wakes up, and the in the final one it's Shepard and his/her LI, as he's afraid that in the next hours one or both of them will die.

Again, tricky as f**k to do, I'm sure, but just think how much more in-character and powerful it would be.

with this mod, the kid is not really a problem anymore. here, it is reduced to a constant reminder, that you cant save everybody in the galaxy. it somehow fuels the fire, that keeps shepard going.

if we cut out the kid and the constant reminder, shepards auto-descent would be even weirder. i think that our real problem with the kid is, that it reminds us, how the original endings looke like.


changing its appearence to anderson of the not-vs, would be strange too, because it would make the kid during the intro totally pointless. it would also be hard to make a believable connection between the sudden nightmares and the not-vs. he/she is dead for over two years and shepard never had bad dreams about them.
if you cut it out of the dreams, you have to completely cut it out of the game.


this is not a simple matter of cutting - there has to be a plausible, connected stand in.

I'm generally not bothered much by the dreams. I mean, I play a paragon Shep so being bothered by witnessing a kid's death makes sense ;)

But the ideas I mentioned above (empty forest and Prothean beacon) are the ways I can think of to make the dreams more "universal" But if they're unfeasable, well, I'm still fine with that.

And yes, with this mod, the kid is just a kid :D

Definitely gonna try this mod out... Really happy someone is taking the time to help save this game.

As for replacing the kid... An interesting idea, though I myself don't mind the dream sequences.

Since the star kid is no longer an issue with mehem, the dreams are simply shepard being disturbed at seeing a child die. Admittedly, it would be just as effective, if not more to see the character left on Virmire... but frankly thats probably quite difficult to implement, and not all that necessary at the moment. So at this point I don't really have a problem with the current dream sequences

the kids death is a clear trigger for the current dreams. imo, seeing ash/kaiden is a bit far fetched at that moment.

The only thing I'd actually like to see from a future MEHEM update is a slightly clearer dialogue sequence between Joker and the captain of the vessel that assists in Shepard's rescue. I imagine it was the VA of the mod's creator or someone he knows and that's cool; it simply could be a bit clearer/fluid with the game video.

Depends. After all, there is that possible conversation about the one left behind on Virmire following the first dream...

Sooo, maybe if it were possible to have them in the dream convincingly might work. I'd still propose that if the dreams were changed at all, it should "merely" be utter darkness while the ordinary sounds play - squad-mates' voices who died along the way etc.

Yeah, I'd like that too. I don't have anything against Fob's voice being in the mod, but I think it could be made to be clearer and fit the sequence better.
