I've got the space battle scored. The problem I'm running into is the length. I can write a symphony, but I really think it gets to be too much. You can't keep pelting an audience with music. You lose the dramatic feel with cinema. The writer needs to know when to shut up. What I'd like to do is this:

* Space battle -- music. check.
* Ground battle -- I've written music through this part. The music sounds fine and fits musically. However, from wearing two hats here (composer & scene director) ... I'm torn. Part of me is feeling obligated to put music in this section, and the other part of me is telling me to shut up and let it go silent to battle sounds only for the next minute. However the battle sounds from the game suck in this section -- they're too muted.

* the clouds clear break open and use that as a cue to come in again with the intro to the victory theme since the space battle and the victory theme are so different.

Just look at the scenes. They're entirely different moods. The break between them would be ideal. I think.

I need to construct some battle sounds fairly consistent with ME3. Do you think anyone would really notice if I used WWII battle sounds and mixed in some pistol shots in with low end sweetners for that carnifex firing at the end? I've got the reaper falling sounds covered. Those should be pretty loud. And I've got the wave covered.

You guys follow me?

I'm going to play around with this and see what works better.


Both options would fit great, either or would work. imo, I always felt that music makes scenes more poweful in conveying the emotions to the audience. In games and especially movies, when things are silent except the music that's playing while an army charges or two warriors are fighting an epic duel, it stirs the emotions of the audience, really hitting home the scene playing out before them. I always think back to at the end of DA:O after Alister or the Queen gives the speech and the army charges the gates, the sounds are pretty much muted except the theme music playing in the background. That's just my 2 cents, but having the battle sounds play out without music would equally be awesome. I'm sure what you decide in the end will be epic.Image IPB

Finally got the latest version installed after messing around with Citadel too much, and gotta say the improved video is fantastic. One of the things that really bugged me before was how jarring the recycling of the Omega 4 Relay video was because of the color issues, and it's so much better now. Thank you for that! I also love the new slide with Aria and Bailey, even though I'm disappointed that it seems to have taken the place of the Miranda one for me? And thank you for fixing the clipping issues with Garrus at the memorial, even though turian hugs seem pretty awkward. :)

I do have a question though, speaking of replacements. How feasible is it to swap the videos when Hackett's talking about the people who died, or to change names on the wall? I ask this because the one thing MEHEM is missing from my headcanon at this point is the fact that Thane's still alive (he was cured in my headcanon and the Citadel coup went down a lot differently as a result).

Obviously I am not trying to request this as a thing for the actual mod, mainly I just want to know if it's at all possible for me to mod my own game like this to better reflect my fic and whatnot. Cause it still makes me cranky seeing him pop up in the dead people montage and on the wall. :\\

Okay guys I've been thinking about this. You know how they say "sleep on it?" I have been. I literally slept on it. I dreamed about it. 1:10 seconds of silence is too long.

However going from http://youtu.be/8fLEEHhnBgA?t=1m35s to where the wave envelops the reapers and they fall is not too long (about 2:08 on the video). That is another cue to come back in with a different theme, and we can go back to the muffled sound again. I can crossfade the the new sound and no one would notice. I'm using Cubase 7.

Basically I just need about 25 seconds of say a Bronze match without any mic on fighting reapers, say the evac wave. With people using standard issue Alliance weaponry. Recorded in best quality. I can rip the sound to another track. Soldiers. Throw some frag grenades far. I'm going to put some heavy reverb on this anyway for ambient sound. No mics on.

do you want just weapons and grenade sounds, or is it ok to have banshees screaming in the background as well?

In the background a banshee or two doesn't really matter. There aren't that many on Bronze. That's why I suggested it. Silver-Platinum have too many of the elite reapers. Use Avengers and you can use predators and I guess carnifex pistols. A Mattock would sound good too. Even the sound of the Fury's Dark Channel hitting makes a good sound along with pistol fire. I'd avoid Shockwave or any of the "ninja classes". Biotic Explosions off the Dark Channel would sound good.

2: during evac there is background music; not sure if you want that or not.
3: when I am shooting (human soldier, avenger and predator) it is much louder than my wingman who is an N7 Fury with mattock and carnifex even if I am close to his character
So... this what you want? If those^ are problems, I can do 2 things
1: arrange larger match where I act as camera man only, everybody else does the shooting during wave 9 or 10
2: Do the arcade arena in Citadel DLC and have quadmates armed with particular weapons

Guys, I think if we are really going with sound only, we should make a real ambient sound file for that battle, which is timed right. Otherwise it's going to feel really weird I think.
I'd extract the audio from the game, rather than record it and edit it together with Audacity. If I mod it into the game as a sound file with the channels right, we might even be able to get surround sound effects. I wouldn't encode it directly with the music.
Maybe I get a chance to build something next weekend but unfortunately, i am rather busy at the moment and I don't have much free time these days.

Can you set your preferences so there is no music. There is a slider for music volume. Set it to zero. That should cover it.  If you can act as camera man that would be perfect. The sound effects alone would be great.

I've pieced together the noises for the reapers falling from some software kits I've got (Heavyocity Evolve Damage, Evolve & Mutations) It'll take about 6 tracks to do it, but it can be done. They go down pretty fast.

Hmmmm.... so end line is, do I continue recording or not? I wasnt sure exactly how the sound I recorded was going to be used, nor did it really matter because julia is making sountrack and Fob is making mod. Whats the solution here?

I would like the file. It would give me something to experiment with soundwise. I won't mix it with the music, for the game. I'll just put it on a track and mute it when I do the mixdown. Please use the highest sound quality you can get with your program. Don't worry about volume. I need headroom. I'm just going to create a completely new session load the video, and use my software to rip the audio onto a stereo track.

Ok fair enough. Unfortunately (even though I have done my best) my sound card, while not low rate, is not all powerful either. The sound doesn't sound bad to me, but I cant be positive of what exactly you are looking for. Hope what I have works for you

Sweet! Really like some of the scenes you have here, are gonna make the ending that much more dramatic. Cannot wait to see what else you have up your sleeve regarding the space battles B)

@wwinters99 Nope, is going to be another fleet officer, from the SSV Teide. A dreadnought captain that leads the attack against Harby. Still, I have to speak with Mr Fob if he wants a short video for him, as I can record additional scenes with his Shep ;)

@cfs3corsair Well, I have to fix at last 5 minor errors for the current sequence. Probably going to be busy for two weeks because I move to another house, but promise to be back and end the video soon :)

I'm still cracking things!

Hey no hurry, you cant rush a project. But frankly between your scenes, the new soundtrack from shotgun julia, some possible new slides, and potential alternate endings for different ems... v0.4 could potentially be nothing short of epic B)
