@avatar0: I really like your second edit. There is one major problem there though: The second rescue video in MEHEM (the one that starts when the oculi fire) needs cannot vary in length (as in: it has to stay the same to the frame). One could possibly somehow shift the whole thing around to make the pause later and make part of it belong to the first video (we have more flexibility there) but it would at this point really be a major change. Not to mention that it would completely mess up sH0tgUn jUliA's scoring efforts. So while this is a great idea and a good edit, there is a reason for me to keep the new scenes together and placed as they are. I'll keep your recommendations on the VO in mind though. Ultimately, it's tough to make any predictions before I get to the final editing, together with Julia's music.
I slowed down certain scenes and sped up others to make it fit into the a 4:45 timeframe.
Of course, I don't know the actual length needed for that part, so I just tried to match it to the music.
Like you said, it will very much down to how well it works with Julia's music, but I did the demo simply to show that some careful manipulation and editing of scenes might achieve more then simply adding dialogues.
If my edit achieves a modicum of success in this regard, then I am a very happy man.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with dialogue, but I do worry that dialogues might ultimately raise more questions then they can possibly answer.
From discussing the dialogues options in the citadel rescue, I realize someone is bound to ask questions such as "Why didn't anyone mention Anderson?" "Are they only here to rescue Shepard?" or "Is [insert to-be-dialoge] really what you say to a bleeding-out Shepard?"
I also thought Joker's comment about "so we can leave before they blow the Normandy in half" to be a little harsh under the circumstances, since he was the one who disobeyed and orders and sent the marines to rescue his CO. Telling them to "c'mon" and "double time it" is understandable, but that particular line I thought somewhat made him to be a bigger a-hole than he is.
Of course, these are nitpicky issues, but as the project comes ever so close to perfection (what you guys have done is truly amazing), I think people will also become a bit antsy in hoping to see the MEHEM that ME deserves come to fruition.
That's why I thought if we can let the iamges and the music do the talking, a lot of the narrative issues might be resolved, as now the fan are left to their own devices to "understand" what was said and what was probably said in certain scenes. The creators of MEHEM will then only need to set the "mood" of the scenes, and leave the rest to the imagination of the players.
Alright, a few things I thought was intereting as I was edited the second part (and you probably already knew these a long time ago, MrFob):
1. Normandy's cruising by the Crucible and Joker's subsequent control panel shot are two scenes that can be slowed down to create a more dramatic feel.
2. I also slowed down both the Shuttle coming the Citadel and the Shuttle flying back to Normandy, wanting to prolong the journey a bit.
3. On the other hand, both the Reaper's attack on the Turian Vessel and Normandy's escape from the white light can be safely sped up without looking weird.
4. The soldiers coming out of the shuttle can also be sped up (only this part), and somewhat I think their movements look more natural this way.
5. As you can probably tell, I slowed down most of Shepard's bloody hand and divided it into severl shots, only speeding up again at the end when the soldier's arm comes down. I think this makes the rescuing hand look more formidable.
6. And of course, I removed the close-up of the oculi and their zapping the bottom of Normandy to make room for all the other things. I personally found these parts to be a bit distracting, but that's just me.
7. Switching the order of the dog fights and the Turian ship blowing up also make for an interesting narrative change.
8. Most of Joker's control panel scenes are modified, and I even moved one from the end to the shuttle return scene, to eliminate any need for Joker to have dialogue. Again, for demonstrative purposes.
9. Really, a lot of things can be done with the last bit, where Normandy escapes the white light. There are several elements here that can be removed, sped up, slowed down, etc, without really impacing the story. If ever scenes need to be edited for time's sake, I think this part is great for the operation table.
10. Blurring the bloodied hand as it first appears is pretty cool. I think the problem with the eyelid is that somewhat Shepard's body and his arm look disjointed when viewed this way. But I think most people will probably be ok with a blurry opening shot or something to this effect.
Again, you guys are truly amazing. Doing some simple editing work has left me exhausted, and this has put me in perspective to the tremendous work the MEHEM team has put into the mod.
I feel absolutely terrible for trying to increase your workload by giving unsolicited suggestions, and I do apologize.
In any case, MrFob and company have made ME3 playable and, moreoever, enjoyable again.
I didn't think it was possible, but you guys really made a differnece. Thank you.
