Don't forget the "yo dawg" logic.

@MrFob, I'll check that scene tonight when I get home, if someone else doesn't do it by then.

Edit: I remote to my home PC and check my recording of the scene and yes that's the right EDI scene.

I think a good compromise would be to have a gif of the departure from Virmire representing the VS instead of EDI, who we establish to be alive here:

www.youtube.com/watch

On the plus-side, this would work for both Mr Alenko and Ms Williams.

I so want to once again thank the OP and all the people working on this project for doing so.  It is truly amazing how fans who are getting nothing more than satisfaction and verbal support from other fans can do something that BW refuses to do.

Major kudos to modders for pulling this off. It's very exciting even if just just from modding perspective.

That being said, I love how everyone pretended it's "totally not about happy ending!!! we just want more answers, SWEAR it's not about happy ending" back in March. I knew it always was, people kept arguing with me how it's totally not, ohh look it is.

The thing is, an awful lot of people never did say it was about more than a happy type of ending.  And most people were not looking for more answers.  I didn't want answers-all I wanted was the reapers blown to hell and some semblance of a galaxy saved-basically what Liara said to Shepard before the assault on TIM's base.  I have never equivocated in that I always wanted one path to happy that could be achieved.  But I, and others, also said I wanted coherence, relevance, adherence to the story and the characters.  I didn't want a trumped up choice, opposite to everything the Shepard I played believed in.  I didn't like my intelligence being insulted as was the case with the EC, which BW suggested I needed in order to understand the brilliance.  I understood the endings just fine.

I really wanted consequences springing from actions and yes, a happier ending.  I never wanted that to be forced upon others that felt a sacrificial death seemed more appropriate, but I wished for a variety of endings.  And happier never meant sunshine and ponies since the galaxy has been ripped apart.  But, I wanted to feel like I won something and like Shepard, who deserved to be happy after all of this, was alive and still deserved, and was able to find some happiness at last.  This project makes that possible.  I'd have preferred the game made it possible, even if difficult to get to, but I am so heartened by the work of those on this project.

Funny thing is, if it is true that the majority of people just wanted a happy ending, then again this mark was missed, but is being achieved here in large measure.  I again offer my thanks to those doing this.

I don't know why people seem to be embarrassed to say "Yes, it is about a happy ending." Is it because they're afraid they'll be accused of being childish? I think that's it, because people think being grown up means being able to "take it".

I say that's a bunch of malarkey. Yeah, I'm that old. When you get that old you want happy endings again, because I've got to tell you something, life doesn't end well. When you hit a certain age you need hope to keep going. The world out there is grim enough. Why the hell should we have to deal with crap like this in a damned video game?

Five years. Five years I think I played this story through the first two installments about 11 times each with all DLC and I go through pretty slow so that's a lot of hours. In March, I isolated myself from BSN so I wouldn't hear the spoilers.

Then the ending and get this stupid glowboy who dictates to me what happens. I die. The mass relays are destroyed. The Normandy crashes on this
jungle planet, and all that's left is Joker, Liara, and Javik. Everyone
else is either dead or starves to death. 5 years!!!! I saved Mordin from
needlessly sacrificing himself because Wreav was going to unleash the
horde on the galaxy. I made peace between the Geth and the Quarians. I
held Tali when she found her father in ME2. I promised she would have a house
on her homeworld. 5 years I trusted them! I stayed faithful to Liara.
All I wanted was to see Liara again when it was over. Was that asking
too much? All I got is this stupid gasp of air.

It could have been great. Game of the Year. Better than Skyrim. But then
they gave us that horrid ending. They promised us wildly
different endings. I checked Youtube after I finished and all of the
endings were the same.

And Bioware turns around and says "We didn't know you wanted closure."
Bah! They destroyed my hope. All they left me with was questions. Now
I'll never see Liara again. Not without a community mod because it was
too much for Bioware to actually do the right thing and fix the ending
in the first place because this Hudson idiot said they didn't know how
to do it.

Well that day in March sent me on an 8 month long depression. It still stings. I couldn't get out of the role of Shepard. Last week I bought a video card for my PC, and I'm going to play the series on the PC with this mod. It is going to cost money, but to hell with it. If it is therapeutic it will be worth the money. It's still not the ending I wanted for the game, but it's 100% better than the one we got. (I wanted to kick the reapers "in the daddybags", but that's obviously never going to happen.)

MrFob is a bloody hero to the community IMO. :D

Is the shuttle change being discussed actually planning to remove the talking bit between Shepard and their LI? Because as stupid as that scene happening is, I find it really touching.

@ pk

the scene itself is very dramatic and i would normally like it.

i just brought it up, because i find it illogical to endanger the real edi (the blue box), in order to save her salvagable body. (this is the extreme) sending in a shuttle might be more effective and less flaring in the first place - why did the devs did not think about that?
if harby hits the normandy with its maingun - the ship is toast. it will explode and take hammer with it. this is like a "written invitation" for harby. kill the archenemy, his/her friends and all of hammer with one shot.

but harby is right there and if shep would have run at the beam instead of saying goodbye, he might not have been hit by harby in the first place.

it is just a suggestion. i will ppost my analysis shortly and hopefully, it is possible to keep most of the dialogue as well - maybe a shorter and more hopefull goodbye ... something like .. "i will meet you at the bar" ... something uplifting.

a change like this would be the icing on the cake and ... now comes the best ... totally optional as well. you can decide to install this file or not. - just like the stargazer part.

As long as I can hex edit the scene back in, I don't mind. I just don't want to choose between MEHEM and losing that scene.

I personally love the scene (between Tali/Shepard) anyway, even though it's pretty damn dumb that it's happening.

how we could alter the evac scene: thoughts and suggestions

this is on the premise, that we can change the shipmodel, dialogue and alter the scene itself. (cut out certain pov-shots)

my analysis is based on this video:

timeline:

0:06 - mako explodes
0:11 - mako almost hits crew
0:14 - crew jumps aside
0:15 - mako falls over
0:19 - shep runs to the crew
0:22 - shep gets crew into cover ---> shep calls for evac (possibility)
0:29 - shep calls for evac ---> shep saying something uplifting (possibility)
0:33 - joker responds ---> "shuttle inbound" or something similar (audiofiles should be there)
0:38 - normandy arrives ---> change model to shuttle
0:42 - sheps hides with crew ---> possible short goodbye "see you at the bar"
0:46 - shep helps crewmember up and they run to the normandy ---> shep: "get out of here - now!"
0:50 - "camera" switches
0:52 - possible cut ---> if we can put in the short goodbye, we can cut off until 1:20 or we drop it
0:59 - close-up on shepard  \\
1:00/1:20 - goodbye              ... here it gets tricky ... maybe we can use some of the close-ups - else, drop
1:22 - harbinger stares
1:25 - close up on shepard (go!) ---> cut after that
1:30 - shep runs towards the beam ---> cut out the long shot on the hangar
1:34 - normandy takes off ---> change model to shuttle
1:38 - shep still runs ---> if we can not alter or cut out pov-shots - shep: "i love you." he already stares at the ship
1:42 - normandy + harbinger ---> change model to shuttle
1:46 - shep runs
1:48 - normandy leaves london ---> change model to shuttle

input / suggestions are welcome.

Hotfix for the EDI slide
I will integrate this properly in the next v0.3. It's a bit choppy at thje moment, due to the video conversion but it's better than nothing for now.

Didn't have time yet to read the new posts. Will get back in a couple of hours.

I think this ending is masterful.  First, thank you for your investment of time.  Second, it is an example of how listening to fans of the franchise can be done and done well.  Third, I would have been completely satisfied with this outcome.  Congratulations!

I checked in once, and I'm checking in again. This is an incredibly interesting modding exercise, and gives me hope. Just not the hope you guys - you go-getting, mojo mixing modding minority (alliteration!) are getting. Just hope that modding is possible for this game full-stop. I'm sorry I'm not on PC, so I can't help you guys debug. I kind of don't want to anyway - even though this is technically impressive, the very concept still leaves an unavoidable bad taste in my gut - like the feeling I get when I watch quarian genocide. Nothing personal. Anyone who's beaten EarthBound will know exactly why this project makes me feel bad like that. Still, I appreciate you not whining about your mistaste about a perfectly good IMO series of endings and actually making a new one. Rock the everloving hell on. B)

You also inspired a new potential headcanon for me, a mix of IT, MEHEM, EC, and Shepard Doesn't Meet The Catalyst. (just in case you're wondering, that means what it says, not "there's no starchild" - Shepard just isn't the one to meet it.)

Basically, Shep gets hit by Harby, pinned inescapably under rubble with 20% health and broken shields (because I hate cutscene power to the max and incompetence and like minimal modifications to my game mechanics - realistic or not. Yes, my N7 Spec. Ops could gel off falling from planetary orbit - fall damage isn't a sync-kill), blah blah IT hallucinates MEHEM, multiplayer characters actually do the whole "galaxy-saving" thing, Shep's fine. But you don't need to hear my headcanons (unless I put them in LP form like I eventually plan to do and this modding project has given me hope that is actually possible) I give you praise for inspiring me. I love being inspired. And I'll give you guys inspiration credit if this project ever comes through. If it does, it won't be recent, though. I plan to make this game my magnum opus, and I haven't even got recording gear set-up yet!

Just some constructive criticism: if, like some posters have claimed, this mod is meant to simply take even more bitter out of a already not too bitter bittersweet ending, emphasize emphasize emphasize the billions dead, communications and supplies being in shambles, and all the other stuff that happens when the Crucible goes off - but don't forget the light at the end of the tunnel. Too much emphasis on the dark stuff will make things almost worse than Refuse, too little would just make Shepard (whom I'm presuming this mod is based around) look callous and selfish. (Perhaps Renegade endings would have less emphasis than Paragon ones?) But A Million Is a Statistic, and hearing about scores of dead turians would matter less to the average Garrusmancer (If you're a Garrusmancer and reading this, I'm not speaking for you specifically, just the average GARmancer) than knowing that "Garr-Bear"  and FemShep are OK. If you disagree, just say so. This mod is for the dissatisfied few, not the happy many. (The EC was for the dissatisfied many - and oh believe me I participated in those campaigns like my life depended on it)

If it's meant to be a happy ending - go nuts. Do whatever you like. But change the foreshadowing that's across the board in ME3 and also in spots of 2 (mainly Arrival, make Shepard succeed in evaccing the colony?) that things won't end the way you'd hope or fear. Why worry about ripping open plot holes if you just wholesale change the plot elements that stick out to you to accommodate your wants? It's entertainment after all, and if that entertains you, go forth and be entertained!

Also planning on making a banner in support of this. Namely, one that plainly states: "Like many, I love BioWare and the Extended Cut. If you don't like the latter and play on PC, MEHEM is the mod for you!" Just in snappy image format. Or one of you awesome guys could make it. And try to be more civil in the back there, a lot of people do, in fact, believe in artistic integrity. I believe in yours, although I do not personally accept it.

Just don't forget, your opinion is not the majority. It is a significant minority - easily significant enough to be deserving of attention, (20% is a huge number in reality - but I forget where the post-EC polls are and are going off memory) but still. I haven't met a single person outside of ME forums and YouTube comments who does not like the EC. I say this because hearing hate kind of... makes me angry. i'm not angry at you, you're being constructive and awesome. I'm angry at the people who hate me for not hating. Vicious vicious bile. Don't give up on this project and become one of them. (I actually got a death threat once - jeez. So forgive my occasional passive-aggressiveness. I mean nothing by it.)

I guess you can be excused for missing the point completely, inasmuch as the mod is titled "Happy Ending"  - in fact, it is a Human Ending (and I would include all the sentient races within that description) that we have here and what was needed all along  - an ending on a human, individual scale, by which we can understand and validate our experience and place in the universe, and an ending that honors and respects the sacrifices of mortal, short-lived, emotive and highly vulnerable beings.

Synthesis and Control are - literally - beyond our comprehension - they may even be better outcomes but neither you nor the devs can know that - and both of them embody the end of individuality - the one with the avatar fused to the overlord, the other the transformation to a group identity.  We can excuse the devs for providing a fanciful "vision" of synthesis or control - being in uncharted territory and all - but they cannot be excused for failing to validate those of us who choose mortality and individuality.

Three cheers for MrFob & Co, for overcoming BW's dereliction.   It is a triumph of the individual over the group mind in more ways than one.

@N7Kopper: It would be hard to ascertain what percentage of people believe what about the ending other than there is a very large amount of people who are dissatisfied. My personal anecdotal evidence from real life is not similar to your own as well, but that's why it's anecdotal and not super valid. You would also have to keep in mind the number of people who just no longer care or were so disappointed they didn't even bother to check out the EC. So any kind of real "polling" is impossible to do outside of real generalities.

Sorry that some people have been mean to you for enjoying the ending - I'm not sure if your concerns are super justified though. No one here bites. : P

Personally I think the end as MEHEM is fine, it just needs minor tweaks in terms of the extraction, etc. if they're even possible. All it is destroy and killing the catalyst before you meet him. It's actually a very minor change in terms of content. Of course, the implications change a lot, but I don't really feel it's an intrusive mod like as if MrFob made it so Anderson lived and the Reapers died and Shepard wished upon a dragon ball and everyone came back to life killed by a reaper. I prefer it that way and not a rewrite, just a redaction of elements. It doesn't really need to be up for approval as a "new canon" for those who don't want to install it.

I'm not being spiteful, I'm suggesting.
But you're right. The figures are slanted one way or another. I'm not trying to convince, just help. My suggestions were based on my archive binging, not trying to imply anyone else is inferior (or superior) for not liking "artsy stuff" as some people put it. You guys have a solid idea now, and I can see that. I was thinking of people who do want to install it, you know, make it look professional once you have the basics down?

And try not to needle me for simply expressing my feelings. I didn't expect anyone to "bite" as you put it. I just didn't want to go in and fetch a screenshot, because that would be derailment. Besides, feelings are what this is all about isn't it? (disregarding some people who don't like the idea of the Catalyst... and even that is partially feelings, even if founded on perception of lore) I'm not trying to needle anybody. I'm sorry if I did... and I probably actually did, now that I think about it XD
Still, thinking of ideas for that "pro ending, and pro ending mods" banner. And don't sweat it if I offended anyone with my comments about the vocal and significant minority. Offending a group back because they offend you isn't cool at all, and not what I tried to do in the least. Especially if the individuals within said group whom you are talking to didn't do anything to you at all. It's midnight right now. I'm tired. (Tellingly, I edited this post a bunch because BSN needs a preview button, I do that when it's late)

I think as it stands MEHEM has a nice balance of sweet and bitter with an emphasis on sweet. This mod takes out the two big bitter moments, at least IMO, out of the Destroy ending:

1. The deaths of Edi and the Geth
2. Shepard not being rescued and reunited with LI/Crew

Unless the player forgot the 30 hours+ before the ending, I think there is enough bitter in the game for the player to handle. Modin's death, Fall of Thessia, the hospital with all the wounded, the refugees, Udina's betrayal, Thane's death, Fall of Earth, Anderson's death, potential Geth/or Quarian genocide, the losses in the Battle for Earth, as well as all the "bitter" events in ME1 and 2, etc are still in the game and with the player. I think it is important (and why I like this mod ALOT) for this mod to be sweeter as it offers a "breath moment" (See what I did there )  for the player to sit back and say "Yeah we lost alot but in the end it all worked out." It's carthetic and in a game like this it's important to have such a moment in the end or the player could potentially be overwhelmed. This happened to me and it wasn't very pleasant.

This is just my opinion and is very subjective, depending on the player. One of the hopes MrFob and the MEHEM creaters have is that this mod inspires others to mod and create their own endings.

From what I gather it seemed to me to be a 50/50 split with the EC. Though I take these kind of polls with a grain of salt.

The main thing that disaapolointed about this whole Ending Affair  (outside of the endings themselves) was the "bile" being thrown by both sides. I was disappointed becuase if those spewing the "bile" actually took the time to understand the other side they would come to the conclusion that both sides had vald and justifable reasons. The name-calling and death threats overshadowed the coherent and respectful messages that were trying to get across.  I just happen to agree more with those who dislike the endings.

But I'm am truly glad that you got something out of the original/EC endings.

Well, and as a side note it would be good to put up a FAQ for this thread :).

The mod does not, in theory, change any plot flags in the save file. That said, MrFob recommends you back up your saves just in case.

Personally, I no longer have a save file where the MEHEM is not the true ending.

Any word on how soon the tutorial for keeping Starkid in will be up? (I'm apparently one of the few who don't mind him so much.) I ask because I've got a new Shepherd ready to go through the endgame and if it won't be long I'll wait.

Also, regarding the new geth/quarian slides in the second version, I'm a bit confused. Should I do both of them if Shepherd's made peace between geth and quarians, or is the first for geth/quarian peace and the second just for geth surviving and not quarians?

Yeah, I believe the ending is supposed to flag the ending as "Destroy"  But we won't really know for sure that importing will work until we have something to import it into ;)

And yeah, a game that won't recognize a MEHEM import is not a game worth playing
