I think that in DAO 2 handed warriors are as effective as sword/shield warrior as tanks. They have -10 armor and -10/15 defense compared to their counterpart, but have the immunity against stun spells that makes them more effective in holding aggro (a stunned tank doesn't attack and if he doesn't attacks he looses aggro).

When Using Shale I generally like to use the Spirit Crystals they tend to keep her from getting debuffs unless I know I'm going into a fight where another resist type is more appropriate. Even still with Wynne in the party Shale doesn't get under 50% life. I've been playing a Rogue on my last few playthroughs since I'm very comfortable having Shale tank, and I have Morrigan with me rockin the Sleep/Horror/Waking Nightmare routine and dropping AOE damage spells in there when needed. It's a cakewalk even on the "tough" encounters.

First off, your stats are a bit off.  Shield wall with expertise and mastery is 10 defense by iteself before even factoring in the up to 21 defense that can be obtained from the sword and shield combo (starfang or bloodline with howe's shield).  Against missle attacks they loose even more, 9% chance to ignore missle attacks completely with howe's shield.  Still, two-handed warriors make inferior tanks if, for no other reason, than that they do not have flanking immunity.  On the lower difficulty levels this might not be a big deal and if wearing griffon's set they can obtain it via items but that only happens very very late in the game.  On top of all that they have fewer active stuns, two to a weapon and shield warriors four, this is balanced with their passive ability to stun with each blow and the shorter cooldowns for roughly the same number of overall stuns but this is mitigated by the fact that stuns on demand are more useful for dealing with overpowers and the like that passive stuns.

Hey, I was wondering what you considered to be the best gear for a Warrior Tank, overall.

Rally wouldn't help my teamates since I got Wynne, Morrigan, and Leliana.

A few notes:
  • I have not yet found Greagoir's Shield, I've merely been told it exists.  I do not know how to get it so if any passers by do I'd love to learn.  Without it either Antivan Leather Boots or Havard's Aegis can be used to maintain 100% spell resistance the boots being a far superior choice late in the game.  Howe's Shield is probably the best option if no spell resistance is needed in that slot.
  • One of my party members needs Far Song, the best bow in the game, which blocks access to, in my opinion, the best tanking boots in the game, Diligince boots.  If my party didn't need Far Song I would use those boots instead.
  • The only weapons I would use on a shield warrior for tanking would be Starfang (longsword), Bloodline, and The Rose's Thorn.  I use whichever weapons my other characters do not need.  If I have a dagger rogue in the party I use Starfang, if I have a two-hand melee in the party I use The Rose's Thorn, and if I have both I use bloodline.  I prefer The Rose's Thorn because of the faster attack speed which offers more chances of the Paralysis rune triggering.
  • If the GM Paralysis rune is removed an additional 8% spell resistance can be droped from other slots.  My first choice would be to pick up Howe's Shield and Gloves of Diligence.  I like the chance of paralysis better than 6 defense and ~3 armor though.
As for rally usage, rally would certainly help Leliana if you have the upgrade for +10 attack.  Even without it the +10 defense is a fairly useful stat for any party memember.  I don't like precise striking on my tanks because it reduces attack speed which reduces the incidence of paralysis with the rune.  If you're runes do not have procs then it becomes a more attractive sustain.

I suppose this requires an explination.  Honnleath offers 4.5 armor and 2 Defense (via dexterity) while Thane offers 3.13 armor (if upgraded) and 3 Defense. So they're pretty close in overall stats.  Given the small trade off I elected to use Honnleath on another character that would get more out of the +2 all stats.

evon's mail can be used with the heavy dragonbone armor and get the set bonus, btw. My current plan for my 2 hander run through.

On wiki it says Evon's mail has 3 rune spots, that's awesome since you can crank up the spell resist and get a better armour than the Knight Commanders. Too bad I screwed up and now the barter won't sell me the armour or even felon's coat for my archer :(

The wiki is wrong. Runes are ONLY for weapons. There are no armors, shields, helmets or whatever with rune slots. Only weapons.

Wades Superior Heavy Dragonscale set with Evon the Great's Mail for the chest. The setbonus still works then.

Where is this?  I haven't come across it in Honnleath.  Plus I find the armor from the Peak as pretty good.

It has often confused me, players citing wade's armors as good gear for tanks. Evon the Great's Mail is an awesome chest piece against high damage melee targets but why equip the Superior Dragonbone gloves and boots when there are much better options, defensively, than ~7 armor, 20% fire resists, 1 combat stamina, 5 defense, and -15% fatigue? If spell resists are not wanted or needed wouldn't filling in the glove and boot slots with Diligence armor work far better with 4 more armor and 1 more defense than filling in those slots with wade's?  Diligence gloves are even available at the very start of the game by simiply traveling to orzamar and unlocking the chest.  The boots require the completion of redcliff but that seems far easier than killing the high dragon to me.

I like the Wade's set pieces because with the excellent fatigue bonus I can maintain all my toggles and still have enough stamina for taunts and shield attacks.

Wade's is the best armor for any Warrior.  The negative fatigue and and increased Stamina Regen is huge.  Worth far, far more then a couple of points in Defense or Armor.  It allows you to continually spam War Cry, Shield Bash, Shield Pummel, Assault and Overwhelm.  Not just a couple of times but constantly, as soon as the timer cools down throughout the whole battle.  Stamina Regen gear is a must have for any Warrior.

Now I would probably NOT give that armor to a tank, but instead to a 2 Hand Warrior who would get a bigger boost.  But if the tank is the only Warrior in the party I would take it.

Wade's is good if you want to use more abilities as a tank. And it looks cool. And you really don't need to min/max your armor if you have a properly built tank anyway...

The thing about Shale is, as far as I can tell, it's a bit of a lottery to see what kind of Perfect crystals you'll get. In my current playthrough, I've only gotten perfect natural crystals, which are only just decent. Her 58 defense rating and susceptibility to knockdowns and flanks is rapidly making her fall behind compared to a warrior (level 16ish). I agree she's great early.

I've found that with the Return to Ostagar DLC coupled with Warden's Keep DLC you can peice the best tanking items togeather.

Armor: King Cailians Set when coupled with powerful the fatigue rating of the armor goes way down which from what I've seen is about 11.8% This allows for faster stamina regen and the armor is massive armor so just from that you get extra threat.

Main Hand: Starfang (1h) the three run slots are good. I usually put in a Grandmaster frost rune. A physical resistance rune and a Spell Resistance rune.

Sheild: I've found two good sheilds that would be Redclife Elite's Sheild or King Cailians sheild.

Rings: I use Key to the City (Orzamar Combat ring) and Harvest Festival Ring (Stone Prisoner DLC)

Amulet: Warden's Oath (if short on money) Or The Spellward (Camp Merchant)

Belt: Andruil's Blessing (Trader at Circle of magi) Or Buckle of the Winds(mage tower)

For my sustained abilities I usually keep up Sheild Wall and Rally with Threaten up when theres alot of mobs around.

For my stats I get around 40 strength then once thats done I put ALL the remaining points in Dex.

The reason I do this is based purely off the Armor and Dodge you get from it. With the gear I've mentioned your stats should be good enough to swing through the game and never lose threat.

Also mobs in DA:O use armor for threat. So if you can avoid having any other companions using Massive armor try to.

Assuming you've uploaded your character(s) to your online profile, it should be an option under "change profile photo."
