I hate to ask this but I can't figure out how to get around this without using a cheat code.

I just bought this Wednesday from Steam and I messed up my first Rogue build so I started over, planning on unlocking the Assassin specialization by level 7. I didn't realize that it would be hard to do, considering how fast I leveled. I reached level seven doing the last quest in Lothering, but I have no way to unlock Assassin anytime soon. I really like the way this character is progressing, but somehow I can't figure out the right code.

I've tried "runscript givespec 4014" and "runscript addspec 4014" but neither of those worked. I've also tried several of the mods to unlock specializations, but for some reason I can't get them to work using the daupdater, as it keeps throwing me an error message about a missing xml file. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with Steam, but it's frustrating.

Anyway, help?

Yes, I know I'll get there, but the problem is that the build I designed is screwed because I didn't anticipate leveling this fast. Hence, the desire for a cheat code.

Get the specialization with another character, this will unlock it for your new character as well.

Monica stop cheating -_- it ruins the game play(that is if your a first player) I was a cheater too but when I did my mage I felt godly without cheats :D try!

Kay as for the other question, I don't know the code, but I can tell you where to get it?

Do you know Zevran? that little elf rogue from the Antivan Crow, well guess what? You needed him after all xD When you get him to like you a lot(runscript zz_addapproval (name) (points) <---your such a cheater) then talk to him and ask about assassin. He'll give it to you

I'm actually totally fine with cheating. ;) I've played enough RPGs that I'm good with it. I just really like this build too much mess it up.

I know I'll need Zevran, but my problem is that it's going to be awhile before I get him since I've only just finished Lothering.

Head over to Dragon Age Nexus and get the Character Respec Mod. Look into the Raven's eyes and your wish will be granted. It works and doesn't break the game like the console can.

Monica21, maybe installing the "specs unlocked" mod via DAModder would work instead? I've read of a few instances where that method of installation did the trick when DAUpdater did not.

Anyway, good luck to you! :)

edit: what he/she said about the raven respec mod. Works great, and it also has an option that allows you to open up any spec that can be purchased. I used it to become a Spirit Healer straightaway at level 7. Love it.

What is the file path for DAModder? I haven't been able to find that. And thanks to everyone for your help. :)

You could just save your level up until you unlock it... you only need to raise him one bar to unlock it I believe, easily done in camp right after you pick him up, just get redcliffe village out of the way, it's nice and quick and you can even abandon it to get past it quicker.

I don't see why one has to cheat on their first play through, ruins the first time experience imo.

Not on my actual PC at the moment, but it's in the main Dragon Age folder (Not the My Documents) in the "bin_ship" folder.

One doesn't have to cheat, but it works for my build. The whole "first time experience" thing is overrated, IMO. I already know that this is a game I'll be addicted to for quite awhile. Kinda "been there, done that" with RPGs. Saving the level up until after Redcliffe is kind of a cheat anyway, right?

I dug around in my Steam directory, found the bin_ship folder and there's no DAModder file. :(

Hmmm.... \\\\Steam\\\\steamapps\\\\common\\\\dragon age origins\\\\bin_ship mebbe? (also i think it's actually called DAUpdater, DAModder is something designed to do the same functions I believe, but is a mod and does not come with the game)

Yep, that's the directory. There is a DAUpdater file there, but that's the one that crashes when I try to use it to run a .dazip file. I get the error message "Cannot find 'DAUpdater.xml' file."

Damn! Well... there is the DAModder mod I mentioned: http://www.dragonage...file.php?id=286. It's essentially the same program, designed as a replacement for people who have trouble with DAUpdater.

Barring that, try right-clicking on the game in your games list in Steam and choose 'verify integrity' ?

It's amazing how the simplest thing can make you feel so stupid. I've been modding or playing with mods since Morrowind so I get how to do it, but it's not working. *sigh* I tried DAModder and it says it's installed, but I get nothing when I play the game. I'd like to blame it on Steam but I have no idea if that's true. I haven't read any documentation about Steam being an issue.

I'm either going to have to re-think the leveling (blerg) or cheat with my other rogue.

I dunno...I don't have any build reasons or problems to cheat, but I was darn tempted after realizing I'd have to go really out of character to unlock bard for myself -- I had to play much nicer than my character ever would to get Leliana to like me enough to teach me.

That's really silly, imo. And it obviously don't reduce the OP's enjoyment so what does it hurt? :)

Since this is a single player game, the comparison isn't really the same, right? ;-)

The DAModder doesn't show up ingame. Unzip it on your desktop, open the folder, click "DAModder" and it will show all the mods you already have including the official DLC. Here you can uninstall them, which you can't with daupdater, and you can also search for other mods that you've downloaded and install them.

Edit: Oh, and the Character Respec 1.6 mod is grand, you can unlock any specialisation (except blood mage and reaver which are quest specific), you can reallocate all your attribute/skill/talent points (as often as you like) by drinking a potion - and you can have all your companions do the same.

No, because the game was designed for one to save their levels if they wish.

Not to mention you keep the spec point even if you do continue to level up, you'll just have to wait until the level after you unlock the spec to put points into it is all.

Plus specs stay unlocked forever, so you could easily unlock it and then start on an earlier save or something simliar (buy the tome and reload -wish I'd known that trick on my first playthrough-).

But yea, I doubt you'd be thinking first time playthroughs were overrated if you didn't have to cheat on them over silly things like "builds" when there are plenty of legit things you can do to keep your "build" how you want it and not cheat. ;)

N' no, I have nothing against cheating, just cheating on a first time playthrough; I feel that cheating should be saved until after one has learned/experienced most of a game (unless one really really sucks at said game, or the game is broken hard, or you really want to lol at your friends and their 'skill', then cheating is okay).

Indeed, you're right... but the feeling of accomplishment without cheating is priceless!
