You can't buy it now anyway, so what's the point?

If the XBOX 8 / PS4 release for nov/december 2013. As Dragon Age III is to release late 2013 it would be possible to see it on next-gen but I would say it is about 90% sure DAIII will be on current gen no matter if the next gen was to be released.

Sources say it will be on the next gen.

Current gen is still a small possibility.

Who's to say that it won't be released on both?

Can you provide a link saying next gen will be released then?  Not that I don't believe you, I would just like to read about it.

I am in the same position as you garrusfan, so I can sympathise, but there is no way that a Bioware developer is going to effectively announce the next generation of consoles on an internet forum.

Seems likely to me that DA3 will be next gen

1. EA CEO John Ricitiello mentioned next gen hardware will be out toward the end of 2013.

2. During EA conf. call with investors, it was announced that EA is spending $80 million on production of games for next gen consoles during the period from May 2012 to April 2013.

3. Many developers have already been working on next gen games for quite some time, hiring "next gen" programmers and designers, etc. There are already at least two next gen games which look quite far advanced, judging by the E3 gameplay footage (Star Wars 1313 and Watch Dogs).

4. DA3 is reportedly set to release toward the end of 2013

They aren't going to say its for hardware that haven't even been officially announced yet. So don't expect them too.

That said, the answer is "probably." Its also likely though that it will release on current gen as well. Next gen will be little more then modernish gaming PC's, meaning it will run the same games just better. That plus more advanced motion controls, like the real Kinect instead of this silly beta tech they have out right now. Assuming they aren't building the game completely around motion controls, there is little reason not to release it across both generations platforms. The fact that its EA makes this extremely likely.

How are they going to make use of the save import if they put DA3 on next gen consoles? I probably won't be able to get a next gen xbox right away so if it does end up on next gen systems I'm buying it for the PC. I don't think I can import from my 360 so I'll just play with import flags.

Don't they want to make it so you can't play used games on next gen consoles? That seems like something EA would love.

No proof other then i just really think it will be on current gen consoles, i could probably try and dig up something to use as proof, but going on gut feeling mostly.

Opinion they'd be stupid to launch it first year of a new console/s as the player base would not be very high and i am sure they want more bang for their buck. PS3 360 already have a huge base of fans in the millions on each, new colsoles first year won't even have close to that.

Back up your data and trade in for the next gen console then it will be cheaper. Best to do it early before the console becomes obsolete and fetches a low price. The PS3 first came out with a version that allowed PS2 play and then it was discontinued due to the higher cost and if that is the case this time round you want to get in early. (Wish i did there is people who are offering $2000 to get their hands on the PS2 compatible PS3 and probably more if it was auctioned).

If you consider, that EA's objective is maximum profit, it would be a bit stupid, if they produce it for a new console, which only a minority of players will own at release.

Last i heard from Sony director, that new console isn't comming sooner then 2015 - 2016. So i doubt new consoles will be comming next year. In fact, i am sure they won't.

Certainly at first glance, it would appear to be in the interest of publishers to release everything on both next gen and current gen consoles. However, if they did this, there would be no incentive for people to go out and buy the new hardware.

In order to drive sales of the new hardware, Microsoft and Sony desperately need lots of next gen titles at launch that are not going to be available for the old consoles. That's how they intend to persuade consumers to switch. They have been pressuring their publishing partners to develop next gen content, and who knows, perhaps they will contribute to the marketing or development costs for these launch titles.

The gameplay demos for Starwars 1313 and Watch Dogs showcased aspects of these games that would have to be completely overhauled to run on current gen consoles. Not only the graphics, but gameplay systems that would be too demanding on the system memory or the CPU, such as lots of NPC actors in an area at once, lots of persistent data, etc. Making them run on current gen hardware would result in a completely different game.

If SW1313 and Watch Dogs were going to be released on both next gen and current gen, it also seems a bit odd that their publishers would say these games will be released on PC and "unnamed platforms," rather than PC, Xbox360, PS3 and "unnamed platforms."

DA3 will be using a (modified?) Frostbite 2 engine, which currently runs on PC, XBox360 and PS3. Unless Frostbite 2 gets one major overhaul that makes it backwards incompatible, it should run on current gen consoles.

Riccitiello didn't suggest this $80 million expenditure for production of next gen titles was their first time investing anything on next gen, only that it was the amount they planned to spend during May 2012 - April 2013.

Also, Dragon Age 2 was released in March 2011, Legacy in July 2011, Mark of the Assassin in October 2011, and Exalted March was intended for release March 2012, but was cancelled due to "other DA opportunities". They might have been in the planning stages or doing concept art and getting started with the project, but the majority of the team was still busy with DA2 during most of 2011. Perhaps they decided to cancel Exalted March and shift the entire team to work on developing the next gen content.
