Illium's more indentured servitude. Yes, they're labled slaves, but they get paid by a legitimate company, have legitimate jobs, are taken care of, can't be abused, and so on.Mr SeVerS wrote...

It's a bit dirty, with bad contracts landing a person in a bad situation, but they're hardly taken by force.
It's kinda like hiring a person to get you a job then having to pay them over an amount of time.
I doubt batarian slavery's as nice, or as complex.

Disappointed by the lack of support for batarians, the greeks and romans enslaved thousands and the history books can't stop going on and on about how enlightened and advanced they were...

Maybe if there is an ME4 or in ME3 SP DLC there will be a Batarian squad mate. I bet he'll be something like an anti-Javik considering how much like the Protheans the Batarians are and that now that their Hegemony is gone they are waking up to the wonders of life without it.

Let's be fair - you hold this opinion because we live in a society where the things that the Batarian culture does are wrong. You've been conditioned to accept that these things are "immoral," in the same way the Batarian culture has been conditioned to believe that it is okay.LegacyOfTheAsh wrote...
Lol yes it's logicial but I'm looking at it from the stance of an actual living being with values. It wasn't right to just start killing and enslaving humans because of colonization. The batarians already had a bad track record of catalyzing hostilities by annexing other worlds that had literally already been settled.
We're not talking about another culture on the planet Earth, but a culture from an entirely different area of the galaxy. Context is important. If you frame their culture under the filter of ours, then of course it's "wrong," but you simply can't do that.
EDIT: I like Batarians. I've always found them interesting.

Ilium as a whole is extremely 'dirty', but everyone's a sexy blue space elf so people are more forgiving. From the codex entry:
"A regional hub of commerce awash in riches, Illium is infamous for its abusive labor practices and legalization of nearly everything except murder. As such, Illium is the preferred production site for weapons and pharmaceuticals that would be illegal nearly everywhere else, made even more lucrative by legal indentured servitude. Among the biotics-related pharmaceutical producers is the Dantius Corporation, a rising star in galactic commerce."

Not as bad as slavery, and not always that great, but there's some blessings in it. The indentured servitude tends to come with contracts. Both parties tend to know what they're getting in to, and are willing participants.
I don't deny Illium is a den of crime, especialy with shoddy contracts, but they're not outright slavers.
Gotta look at the big picture. Quarian Bum bum got helped out by it IMO. The feros survivors, not so much.

I remember it well enough. I just didn't see any relevance.
Apparently we have different opinions on what slavery is. Indentured servants are not slaves. In most cases they're working off a debt. They cannot be abused or mistreated. Even their medical conditions have to be taken care of. It really isn't much different from normal employment, in all respects. The difference being that they cannot quit unless the owner of their contract breaks one of the many rules and guidelines they must follow. It is not as simple as "you will work in my mines and like it for I am your Master, whiplash!"
Being forced to work for someone under contract, in a invoriment where your boss cannot abuse you, has to feed you and provide housing and make sure your health is maintained? You're right, how did I not make the connection before, its very much the same thing batarians do to all the men, women and children they raid and capture like cattle.
All this can depend on te contract, and Im sure some deals are more harsh than others. But for the most part, it isn't unbearable and most of the time its terms both parties have agreed on. They can be sneaky and hide fine-print, sure. But its still not as bad as slavery.
Batarians are not 'nice' to their slaves. Infact given what lore has given us to go on, they're quite relentless and uncaring. They work them in dangerous envoriments, they barely feed them, they make examples of them, they abuse them. Physically, emotionally, sexually. They seem to be rather sadistic - especially when it comes to humans.
Illium also does not represent Asari a whole. Infact indentured servants aren't even legal outside of Illium, I don't believe. They're not as strictly bound to the Citadel law as most. Its a bit like Noveria in that regard. What Exo-Geni was doing to the colonist of Feros was worst.
Shepard's reaction of "quarian slave" was actually pretty dramatic and made the situation seem more immoral than it actually was. Its not the same as slavery.

Each time an human group found a less advanced other human group, it end up with war, slavery, even extermination.
They are our darkest side, so we don't like them.

People talk about their caste system and slavery like it's this determining factor in whether the species should live or die, seemingly forgetting that our entire species worked like that for thousands and thousands of years until recently, and still does in places.
Batarians are the most human-like race in the ME series.
