I think ME2 and ME3 did a good job of separating the normal batarians who may or may not have been manipulated by their government into thinking they don't like humans, and the terrorist/pirate/slaver monstrosities that Shepard ends up fighting a lot.
Marsh the shop owner on Omega? Perfectly reasonable guy.
Batarian-civilian-conversing-with-Frenchman? Good guy who needed a little help to get over his indoctrinated racism.
Balak? Complete lunatic mass murderer.
That, more than anything, made me like the Batarians. Seeing how the Batarian just could NOT give a crap, and was probably holding back for fear of getting arrested, as this human talked to him was expected. Coming back repeatedly to see them find common ground and, one would hope, perhaps even develop something of a friendship really showed that they were capable of stepping up.
I also liked the group seeking comfort in their cultural/religious past during these dark times. Firstly, it's a very "human" reaction (in the sense that it's something that humans often do themselves), and secondly it shows that they have a rich cultural history beyond just "Humans suck!" and "MOAR SLAVES PREEZ".

No- they are still dirty slavers of
human beings. So yes, the enemy of my enemy is my friend- but I wouldn't
ever go as far as to say "I like them". They are horrible to humans and
treat us like animal pets to be abused. Hell no.
Not picking on this poster specifically, she's just the most recent one in the thread for me to copy. Attitudes like this are, frankly, completely racist. Ironically, they're just as bad as the thing that they're hating... It's obvious that not all Batarians are slavers or hate humans, otherwise we wouldn't have some of the characters in the game that Schneidend mentioned. We also wouldn't have Batarians joinin the Alliance to fight the Reapers in multiplayer.
In fact, to a certain extent those Batarian Soldiers, Sentinels and Vanguards are MORE heroic than some of the other races. They're not fighting for their home, because it's already destroyed. They're not fighting to save lives, because they already lost most of their people. They're fighting for a bit of revenge, sure, but they're also putting their lives on the line to save the rest of the galaxy. After losing so much, they're putting everything they have left on the line to join the fight...that's pretty BA as far as I'm concerned.
