Key words Indentured Servitude.

Not as bad as slavery, and not always that great, but there's some blessings in it. The indentured servitude tends to come with contracts. Both parties tend to know what they're getting in to, and are willing participants.

I don't deny Illium is a den of crime, especialy with shoddy contracts, but they're not outright slavers. :P

Gotta look at the big picture. Quarian Bum bum got helped out by it IMO. The feros survivors, not so much.

You can gussy up owning another sentient being as much as you want, but its still about as wrong as you can get. Various human rights groups/national laws have debt bondage/indentured servitude in the same catergory as slavery. Its exploiting someone that's down on their luck/in a bad position in pretty much the worst way possible.

I think ME2 and ME3 did a good job of separating the normal batarians who may or may not have been manipulated by their government into thinking they don't like humans, and the terrorist/pirate/slaver monstrosities that Shepard ends up fighting a lot.

Marsh the shop owner on Omega? Perfectly reasonable guy.
Batarian-civilian-conversing-with-Frenchman? Good guy who needed a little help to get over his indoctrinated racism.
Balak? Complete lunatic mass murderer.

No they're scum sucking b?#%@$^s that need to be erradicated from the universe. I'm glad the reapers gave them the finger and I had no problem with destroying the relay and killing thousands of them. Not with what they do to humans and human worlds. karmas a b*&$h. That being said I can't wait to unlock the Bat Van. He's awesome. Also they gave us the kishock. they should be destroyed for that too.

To be fair, that's not how it happened. The Alliance only took worlds the batarians were thinking about maybe colonizing sometime later, possibly. The Hegemony demanded the Council give them exclusive rights to those areas, but the Council decided they were fair game.

It really seemed like Bioware down played them through the course of the series. I will admit that I did enjoy the Saren torture scene in the first book though.

Er....you did?Why?

Who doesn't enjoy interspecies rape that's interrupted by a torture snuff scene?

It has definitely changed my opinion of them. It feels weird to say, but I think they might be my favorite multiplayer race to play, next to the male Quarians, which was also an unexpected. I think their character models still need a lot of work though, and hopefully we'll see that come through in the following game. I would really, really like to see more of a unique physiology, rather than just a Batarian head slapped onto a human body.

No- they are still dirty slavers of human beings. So yes, the enemy of my enemy is my friend- but I wouldn't ever go as far as to say "I like them". They are horrible to humans and treat us like animal pets to be abused. Hell no.

Always had a bit of a soft spot for the underdog. Somewhat annoying that so many people seem to love the Geth and Turians but despise Batarians. For the Batarians it is the ruling class and government that should be despised, NOT the common people or the people as a whole. As a species they desperately need political reforms and one good thing about the Reapers near obliterating them is they are likely to have it forced on them.

I've always liked batarians, and multiplayer made me love them.  So, no, I haven't changed my mind at all.

If there's a race that annoys me, it's those arrogant, entitled humans.

Of course, the Batarians are a proud, great people and there is absolutely no reason to hate them at all. Anyone who claims otherwise is an anti-Batarian bigot and enemy of the Hegemony.

Also, I like having teeth.

That, more than anything, made me like the Batarians.  Seeing how the Batarian just could NOT give a crap, and was probably holding back for fear of getting arrested, as this human talked to him was expected.  Coming back repeatedly to see them find common ground and, one would hope, perhaps even develop something of a friendship really showed that they were capable of stepping up.

I also liked the group seeking comfort in their cultural/religious past during these dark times.  Firstly, it's a very "human" reaction (in the sense that it's something that humans often do themselves), and secondly it shows that they have a rich cultural history beyond just "Humans suck!" and "MOAR SLAVES PREEZ".

Not picking on this poster specifically, she's just the most recent one in the thread for me to copy.  Attitudes like this are, frankly, completely racist.  Ironically, they're just as bad as the thing that they're hating...  It's obvious that not all Batarians are slavers or hate humans, otherwise we wouldn't have some of the characters in the game that Schneidend mentioned.  We also wouldn't have Batarians joinin the Alliance to fight the Reapers in multiplayer.

In fact, to a certain extent those Batarian Soldiers, Sentinels and Vanguards are MORE heroic than some of the other races.  They're not fighting for their home, because it's already destroyed.  They're not fighting to save lives, because they already lost most of their people.  They're fighting for a bit of revenge, sure, but they're also putting their lives on the line to save the rest of the galaxy.  After losing so much, they're putting everything they have left on the line to join the fight...that's pretty BA as far as I'm concerned.

BTW, just throwing this out there, but you could not take my money fast enough if they released a future Mass Effect based around a Batarian main character.  Perhaps something set during the time leading up to the destruction of the relay and the exodus of the Batarians following the initial invasion.  "Fall of the Hegemony" or something like that...

Oh well, one can hope...  :D

Lore-wise, any Batarians who are down to drop into a hot zone with three other randos and face waves of enemies are cool with me. Thanks for sharing your cool harpoon thing. Sorry bout your planet, bro :(

The Batarians that are left, their okay. Like other people are saying, I mostly hated the government. But I didn't need the multilayer to see this. I always try to make sure I never damn a race as a whole. Also, I've only played a Batarian 3 times.
...and their heads look like raisins.

I don't play them in MP, and I still hate them in SP. I like almost all the species of the Saga (Just some disappoint things in Asari and Salarians), I love Quarian, Turian, Vorcha, Drell, Krogan, but I can't stand Batarians.

Also in the refugee camp area of the Citdal, if you just walk around and look at the people throughout the game, you eventually see a mixed group near the entrance all watching one of the big TVs. There's a Batarian with his hand on the shoulder of a distraught female human, comforting her.

Kicked me right in my feels, that did. Posted Image

Do I greatly dislike the Hegemony and those Batarians that choose to be slavers/bad mercenaries? You bet I do, just like I would dislike bad governments and bad persons of any other race. Do I condemn the entire Batarian race for the actions of only some of their kind? Absolutely not, just as I wouldn't condemn all Turians because of one mean teacher in Kaidan's biotics school, just as I wouldn't condemn all Salarians because of one crazy doctor who was farming people's organs in ME 1. I could go on, but I feel I have sufficiently made my point.

Basically, any Batarian that is struggling to not only stay alive, but to help us in the Reaper fight is a-okay in my book. I say welcome, brother, and feel free to take as much of my medigel as you may need. Posted Image

The first book is actually pretty decent and gives a lot of back story on plot characters. I won't try to spoil anything, but yes, there are some "adult" themes placed in the novels.
