Batarians are mercenaries, slavers and pirates. Oh, and also terrible bartenders. My opinion is not changed playing mp, and i even dislike having a batarian in the lobby

Nope, they still are the scum of the galaxy.

Most of them are pirates or slavers. Most of them hates humans. or they look down on us.

Their government funds and supports the attacks against humans. Their commanding officers are slavers or terrorist in their free time.

The only good batarian is a dead one. They have been causing problems to the galaxy even before humanity joined the galaxy community.

I think of batarians like I do any third-worldish (not to offend anyone, not sure if that term is PC anymore) country ruled by an oppressive minority.
Lots of the batarians we see are bad people, but most are probably just trying to live their life and aren't inherently evil
I'm also reminded of Satan's quote from Paradise Lost:
"so farewell hope and with hope farewell fear, farewell remorse all good to me is lost"

I've loved Batarians from the start. Same as Vorcha. I think brutal criminals who practically run a whole damn system deserve some admiration and recognition. Not to mention the fact that they're some of the toughest warriors in any army.
Sure they're not aesthetically pleasing, but it ramps up the intimidation factor when you're being netted and dragged to a waiting ship to be sold off into slavery.
If Mass Effect weren't so PG-13, I can only imagine what kind of dismemberment would occur if a Vorcha got their Omni-Claws on a Cerberus Trooper....

In SP, in the first 2 games, 90% of the Batarians you meet are either enemies you have to kill, or complete ****s when you talk to them, or both. A few of them seem tolerable, though. In 3 you talk to a couple that are like the ones from the first 2 games but most of the ones on the Citadel are just regular folks looking to survive.

I always loved the batarians. They're the planet's biggest badasses, even more so than the krogan since they don't self-destruct but are smart enough to really organize themselves. Like Zaeed said, they'll turn an entire planet into a glass parking lot without giving it a second thought.
I never inherently despised batarians, although a couple of them are criminal scum (but then, any race has its antagonists (Saren, Golo, Tazzik, lots of krogan and geth,...) They're not much worse than the pre-Wrex krogan in my opinion, but when playing as Shepard you never get a batarian squadmate, and are thus unable to get more insight in the mind of a batarian and his/her culture. I mean, quarians, turians, salarians, krogan, geth,... They all committed genocide at some point yet none of them are seen as inherently evil. I never judged the batarians either.

This.  I think in a future ME game they should really add a Batarian squaddie or something, to let you see the other side of their people.

Also, this attitude is just silly.  So we should hate all Americans because of slavery in the 1800's?  I suppose we should also hate all Germans and Russians because of the crimes that their ruling parties committed during WWII?  Should we also hate all Muslims due to Sept 11, various Embassy bombings and other terrorist actions?

Heck, lets go old school.  The English and the French are terrible due to any number of bad things during the middle ages.  Spanish are religious zealots due to the inquisition.  Irish are all terrorists.  I could go on...

Point is, throughout history there are thousands of example of people who did bad things.  Sometimes they did those things and then changed, and sometimes those things were done by a small group within that people that didn't represent sentiment of everyone within that group.  Either way, you can't hold grudges forever, and you can't judge an entire people on the actions of just a few individuals.

And while yes, "It's just a video game", I feel that such questions aren't out of line when dealing with the Mass Effect series.  The games have always done such a good job of tackling complex and adult (in the maturity sense, not the titilating kind) topics that I don't think it's at all out of the realm of possibility that they purposely wrote Batarians in such a way as to cause the player to examine their preconceived notions about them.

Plus, DEM BLADES!!!!  :D

To hate batarians is to hate humanitiy.
Batarians are pretty much the closest likeness to real humans in the mass effect universe,
Why? because all these things that people are pointing out about what makes the batarians so bad has and is happaning here and now on earth.
So do people hate batarians because they remind us of our own kins past and current state or is it something else?
I didn't vote for my current goverment but i still have to live with the laws and rules they placed,
why isn't the hamogany seen this way.

Pre-ME3, if you had never played a ME game and just heard me describe it, you'd think there was an alien species in the game called the Fukkenbatarians.

Playing them in MP didn't change my opinion of them.  Actually, the Batarian refugee in SP who had the multi-part conversation with that French refugee rehabbed them somewhat for me.

Playing as a Vorcha on the other hand has really given me a soft spot for those violent little buggers.

You can't judge a whole race by the actions of the few. Maybe most Batarians are pacifists. ;-)

ha! I was just telling my friend that I play ME3 mp with this exact feeling. Yes, playing with the batarians has completely changed my feelings about them. I used to hate them, and look forward to and fighting them in ME and ME2. It was a nice breakup from the Geth or Collectors.

Yet, since playing as the batarian soldier and the batarian vanguard I really really like them and kinda building my own story about them in my head. They're super fun characters to play with.

And let's be serious here.. some batarians are slavers/terrorists/bad people.. but not all batarians are. I'm sure there are nice ones. I will say, playing as batarians in mp has definitely opened me up to possibilities of liking them.

Before ME3 I was mostly... curious about Batarians. They were pretty mysterious (and still are, compared to other races). I remember being confused when James brought them up while asking where the "meat" was for the summit.

Now I can definately understand why James grouped them with the Krogan, and why the Reapers hit them first. If the Reapers hadn't taken out Khar 'Shan in a surprise attack, they would have been forced into a brutal, high-strain conflict with a well-trained, well-equipped, and extremely motivated fighting force. The Batarians are the best, and they damn-well know it.

They're up there with Krogan, Geth, and Turians as one of my favorite races.

And as an off-topic note: Quarians in the "attractive alien" slot? Really? You have a thing for masks?

I think the Reapers hit the batarians first for two reasons.  One, they entered the galaxy in their space.  Two, they don't have allies.  Which makes them easier targets

But to keep it on topic.  No, it doesn't change my mind about them.  But I do enjoy playing with the batarian sentinel and I do love my vorcha soldier.  The over-cover heavy melee is cool to watch.  "I'm alive."

ETA: I mistyped that statement- what I meant to say is that I don't hate them just becuase they Batarians. I dislike their social practices. Actually- I hate slavery- and they enjoy slavery. So yep-that's an issue.

It's really not so much that they "enjoy" slavery as it was a part of their caste system. We're talking centuries, perhaps millenia, of slavery as a societal norm. You can't wag your finger at the average batarian in the same way you can't wag your finger at the average Southerner in pre-Civil War America, it's a societal issue and not something they personally have control over. As in the American South, there were probably plenty of batarians who wanted slavery abolished, but their opinions are never heard because they have a we'll-put-a-black-bag-over-your-head-and-make-you-disappear style of government.

Are their morals any different than the "ultra-nationalist" Protheans? If Batarians are intolerant scum because they enslave people then Protheans are intolerant scum for assimilating other species in their cycle.

Well, it wasn't the MP that changed my view...

It was the SP. EDI talks about how the batarians aren't like what she expected them to be, there's that batarian comforting that human women at the memorial wall in the citadel...

There's also that pretty nice ME2 easter egg when you listen to the batarian preacher and of course, that conversation between the batarian and the human...

The SP is what changed my mind about the batarians...

You know, except for all those batarian civilians not doing anything wrong in SP, and the fact that being a good class in MP means they're fighting hard to defeat the Reapers just like everyone else.
