In terms of overall story, exploration, and starting that combat system, ME1.

Honorable mention to ME2, as it nailed the combat and RPG-element changes, as well as bits and pieces like the Suicide Mission.

Mass Effect 3 had the best set pieces, level design, playing out of the long list of consequences, and it was arguably more emotional than ME1.

ME1 hands down. Favorite missions, favorite antagonists, favorite characters. The introduction to the world of ME was outstanding. The exploration was great, the game felt so big.

ME1 had the best central plot (and that fresh first time wonderment), and ME3 has the best gameplay of course and was the most emotionally moving, but ME2 had far better quality story telling overall, plenty great enough gameplay, the best ending sequence (your decisions actually mattered back then, derp) and the episodic structure that made it almost like playing through a season on star trek or something made it so so so memorable.  Oh yeah and Shadow Broker is the finest dlc I've ever played and ever expect to judging by whats come out for ME3 so far...

TL;DR ME2.

Mass effect 2.

By far the most well written game i've ever played with Fantastic characters, soundtrack, atmoshpere and complexity.

Honorable mentions for ME1s sense of wonder and ME3 soundtrack and Tuchanka arc

ME1 (in terms of story)

ME2 is more enjoyable though

All in all ME2, followed closely by ME1.
Personally, I found ME3 somewhat disappointing.

ME2 easily. ME1 had potential, ME2 delivered on that potential. ME3 dropped ball big time.

While i like Me3 what really infuriates me is that Thessia commercial on how your chocies matter. This makes me aggressive at the person who thought that this LIE should be released.
What is this??????"? Politics?
On topic: Me2 and ME1 comes very close. it is not the combat , it is that squadies in me1 act like talking codexes sometimes (Liara wrex and tali i am looking at you)

You know, from a time when Shepard knew how to climb out of rubble.

Me2 had best final mission, but the ship kinda lacked crew conversations, badly. ME1 was great for 1st walkthrough as it really creates and sucks you into ME universe... but it sux to be replayed..

I'd go with ME3, as it has best dialogue (even if many of it is autodialogue, I find Shepard most believable character in 3), crew conversation and best gameplay. It's followed closely by ME2 though.

Mass effect 3 doesn't not even deserve to be in the same sentence as the other two.

Mass1 was fantastic...Mass2 was even better...after each mission I was excited about where my next mission would take me,loads of fresh new locations, loads of team mates....and again the collectors added that mystery element to the story, dark, creepy bad guys....loved it.
