Love the game. Racked up about 450 hrs so far. I have never seen much use for the mic in game, but it causes only minor problems through people's volume set too high, over-excited players etc.

Last night I met the most abusive player I've ever played with in any game. While his character lay dead (twice) he loudly explained our personal failure as human beings at every turn.

I'm no wilting violet and I'm not a young fella. I've been around a bit, but in the context of a video game for 13 year olds and above, I was left shaken by this event.

Sadly I could not confirm which player it was (there was a lot of dead going on...) and the host quit immediately at game end.

My son is getting to the age where he can play and is very keen to join the battle. I am now less keen. No one should be able to to subjected to what the team was subjected to last night.

Is there a setting I can tinker with that will kill the feed from other people's mics?
Cheers.

Edit: on PC

Which platform?

I haven't found a way to do it yet on PS3... but I've seen other posts saying you can mute them on xbox/pc (but didnt pay much attention as I'm not on that version)

I'm on PS3 and what I do is turn my mic on and just set it to the side, then you can't hear them.

You can on xbox (I know I do), but it looks like you are on PC?

Not that I want to be "that guy" and I know it is none of my business but I am curious... You feel your son is old enough to play an "M" rated game like mass effect but not old enough to deal with someone who is acting immature on a mic?

If you're playing on PC, go into your "Options" menu and choose 'Sound' and turn everything relating to voice chat and microphone OFF (or "No Voice").

Ah, hopefully that'll do the trick. I'll try tonight. Thanks.

On PS3, I just turn my mic volume off so I don't have to listen to the annoying squeakers.

In a party, we just kick them. Heard the "I will turn my mic off" bit far too many times, only for them to leave it on in game for a full 20 minutes to know any child still suckling off mommy's teet should not have a mature game.

Kick = Quietness.

You really think it's worth it? I've played a lot (on PC) and never heard anything I would consider offensive. The worst is when the occasional person leaves their mic "always on" and you can hear background music or the occasional expletive. Against that some people do say useful things which you will no longer even be aware of. IMO you are overreacting, you are compromising teamwork to fix a problem that occurs extremely infrequently. If they are being offensive perhaps just ask them to tone it down.

When i'm wearing my headset, I just put the switch for voice chat volume all the way down and keep game volume on - if people are being annoying.

Can't use headset at the moment because of medical reasons and last night I got a game with someone who had some kind of mic on. I didn't know which player it was as I was thrown in a game that had already started but it was annoying. Basically, I think it's someone who just forgot a mic was on as it was just background noise of a screaming kid and various people shouting. I just muted my tv until the round was over. Was annoying not being able to hear the game sounds but it was all I could do at the time.

What I do if people get abusive is put my mic on Always on and blast my dance music collection.

Hit me baby one more time!

When I'm in a game and some starts getting vocally abusive, I quit. (especially when I'm the host) I tell them that their attitude sucks and then leave. I'm playing for fun and don't take my consumables so seriously that I'm going to put up with a screaming buttmunch. If other people want to play with him or don't care, they can play on their own.

On Xbox you can also turn off voice communications from everybody who isn't on your friends list, if you prefer. Sometimes it's a life-saver.

Buy a cheap pair of headphones, plug them in, and set Voice Output to those. You'll get all the game sounds and none of the extra chatter.

What's worse?

1. Foreign people that either speak a different language, or have such a thick accent that you can't understand them

2. People who insult other players and/or whine constantly about somebody stealing their kills

3. Person who has a mic too low for you to hear what they're saying, yet they expect you to hear them

4. Person with their mic on who never says anything -- the result just leaves you with the game's sound a bit lower than usual

5. Little kid

6. People who have the mic on, but play nothing but music the whole time (or worse, they just sit there and eat chips, creepily)

They're all annoying to me, but I think #2 is by far the worst. After we finish the game and I collect my credits, I either leave (if there's more than one of the fools) or vote to kick the offender.

Don't know about the PC because I'm on the 360. But, when I play PUGs solo, I just put myself in a party so I don't hear the randoms. "Sorry Mr. (or Ms.) 1 in 100 That's Actually Worth Listening To, I can't take the other 99 ignorant fools blaring music, calling each other racist or homophobic **** or just generally being annoying dbags."

I agree with you. Not usually a problem, but for my son I'll eliminate the possibility completely. It was pretty bad...
I mainly play silver, the mics are never used for teamwork & strategy anyway.
Also, I don't use a mic, so he was safe from any response.

LOL, I maybe over reacting now, but you'd loved what I wrote and didn't post last night!

I've been playing (PC) since the game released, and have only run into 2 truly abusive players in that time (and a few with the always-on mic who loved their music enough to share with me). Don't let a few bad apples ruin your experience. Over all, the PC community has been great, in my experience.

honestly just flood the com with music, i do it when people annoy me and it works.

but wow oh wow is the abuse even more sexy when they try overpower the music with their voices.
