it would impy that SMGs in this game (or anything) provides suppressive fire.

Well, it may not be very powerful fire, but technically I think it applies. Because all SMGs are either automatic or semi-automatic, and then again only 2 are semi.

You need to be one to get that banner.

It's not that bad.  You only have to do 5 of them.  If you put them on a Turian or Geth, the ROF, stability, and headshot bonuses make them pretty effective.  Personally, I'm finding the pistol challenge to be much less fun.  The Phalanx, Eagle, and Arc Pistol are much worse then any of the SMG's.

Devastator Mode, dude.  You can turn any SMG into a headshot machine with Devastator Mode.  Forget the Hurricane, everyone knows how awesome that is.  You can literally snipe with a Tempest if you use it with Devastator Mode and fire from cover.  I did a couple of Bronze solos to get my SMG Mastery banner (takes 2 solos per challenge).  Using the Tempest, I was able to kill the entire Wave 1 of Bronze in one Tempest clip, firing all the way across FB Giant (from the control room at the top of the ramp to the opposite building).  I think that's like 10 Cannibals.  And that's without any ammo mods or amps.
