I agree with the op, I expected the story to be much better (but that's my problem).

But the thing that really annoys is the ending. I can't really tell another RPG from my memory, that has such a lame one.

Fallout 3 did. It had the worst ending ever. But then again, personally I don't think of it as an RPG. More like a hybrid with stronger leanings to a FPS.

Fallout 3.  That was so bad I wanted my money back.  When I read later that they'd claimed "over 100 endings"... well, let's just say I thought that was the most hideous PR codswallop I'd ever heard.

And this is having played an old RPG called Matrix Cubed. (If you played it, you'd know how bad its ending was)

I can understand the landsmeet being a let down - but what aspect of the ending was so bad?

If you all are talking about the Morrigan ritual or the quality of the AD as a final boss, then maybe I can understand. But the Heroic sacrifice and the epilogue were some of the best parts of the game to my mind.

Or is it that all endings where the protagonist kills him/herself and/or a companion performs a sacrifice are bad?

I thought Fallout 3's ending was bad because there could be so much of the game left unplayed if you just played the main quest till the end - which they rectified with Broken Steel.

I disagree with you soooo much... Dragon age story is one of the best and I've played(expect balders gate I tryed it but it seemed too boaring..) all the good even the ending was pretty cool dispite it ends abit annoying so yeah even fallout 3 wasn't so bad if you think of the broken steel DLC which is one of the best DLC out there..

Broken Steel fixed a problem which never should have existed in the first place. To be told you have to die because, AND I QUOTE, "it is your destiny" was the ugliest writer cop out ever. I wouldn't have minded if I'd had to revert to an earlier save to experience the rest of the game. But to have it forced upon me like that was nothing short of disgusting.



Personally, I think Dragon Age has some great endings and plot lines. I agree, there could have been more suspense with Alistair's heritage, and Loghain felt a bit removed as an enemy for much of the game, but overall I thought it was a well told and engrossing story.

I think the most people that tend to go "The ending sucked" are the ones whom didn't get the "happily ever after" ending they thought they would. Seriously have any of them played the game more than once, probably not and thus won't know any different.

True enough. When the rocks fell and everyone died (po'd dungeon master, anyone ) I wanted to scream. They did somewhat elegantly fix that with MotB, but still. DA:O is golden compared to that, at least the player has choices.

I couldn't agree more, even if I tried. On both points, actually. Short. Concise. Truth. What actually made me really angry, aside from 'game over', was that the PC had three, yes three companions who could've easily do the deed without taken major or even any damage. Weak. Major weak.
That OC was the reason I never even touched any add-ons. I might if they land in the double bargain bins at MediaMarkt, other than that, forget it. I was ever so disappointed.

So is the Lord of the Rings when you look at it the same way. Pair of small dudes carry a magic ring to a big mountain while there's extensive subplots along their way.

The "subplots" in LoTR aren't unrelated like in DA:O. In LoTR the subplots all have to do with the evil going on in Mordor. In DA:O, what do the werewolves, or mages being attacked by blood mages, or political problems in Orzammar have to do with the Blight? Absolutely nothing. 

  Ya, and the mages returning from the debacle of Ostagar, and using the subsequent turmoil to rid themselves of the Templars is totally bogus, as no one has ever used internal turmoil to enact their plots. Nor is is sensible to have a unitted Orzammar a related topic, as nations in the grip of civil war are always willing to put that aside to fight united for a different nation, treaty or no.

  You are such a professional writer, why don't you have a job writing for Bioware? Or anywhere.

I agree to a point with him. I mean really what are the chances that the 3 groups you have treaties with, just so happen to have dire situations going on that require your help, when the land needs them most?

1 or 2 maybe, but all 3? Not likely. I think having one of them at least say something like "I don't care about a treaty that was signed 200+ years ago, I don't have to honor anything. If you want the help of my people it's going to cost you!" Then you can go into a subplot type scenario.

Actually I thought the most tragic ending was easily the best of them all, but I too think from the end of the Landsmeet on the story takes a serious nosedive. One of the bigger reasons is your companions, aside from Alistair and Morrigan, seem to fall off the face of the earth at Redcliff. After spending a year or two struggling and grinding to get to the point your at now, on the eve of the battle you've all been anticipating, no one has anything to say, nothing to talk about. It just gives it such a artificial feel which is a shame considering how well the companions and your interactions with them were throughout the game.

Even worse if you romanced Lel or Zev as it essentially dies once you get to Redcliff until the epilogue. Discussing the ritual with either of those two would have been, interesting to say the least. Talk to them about your possible fate (Though I believe Zev already has an idea), spend a final night together, you know things that just flesh it out and make it feel more real. Of course on top of the tower if you choose to sacrifice yourself and they're standing ten feet away from you you'd assume you'd at least give them a passing glace with a "Good bye, I love you" type scene. One of those little things that I think would have had such a memorable impact on that ending. Not the case, you say a few words with Alistair and go die saving the world, don't even make eye contact with your lover. Must have had one nasty fight prior to the battle.

But the overall story just seems to die off once you complete the landsmeet. Aside from your talk with Morrigan and Riordan nothing is ever really added, even though those are both pretty big revelations in the plot. You basically grind your way to the ending. Most people consider the ending of a story to be the most important part as that is the part that is going to have the most lasting effect in a persons mind. The problem is there is nothing memorable here, nothing in the last few hours that I go back and say great moment. All that really came out of the ending was more questions then we had at the start of the game and the story.

The two main problems that I have with the story are Loghain and the connection between stories.



In the game itself, Loghain's reason to betray Cailan was never really explained. This make poor depth to the character building. Through the books, people say that Loghain's past is explained and it showed why he hated Orlais and Grey Wardens. Fair enough, but it doesn't change the fact that the game has a weak explanation for Loghain's background. And even with the explanation from the book about Loghain's hatred for outsiders and him clashing ideas with Cailan, is it actually solid enough reason to betray your king? Loghain loves Ferelden and he'd do whatever it takes (except killing Anora), surely he knew that his act of betrayal (plus all the plotting with Uldred and Jowan) would weaken Ferelden as a nation and thus, put Ferelden's safety/survival at risk from the darkspawn attacks. It is a silly risk to take just to satisfy his own selfish wants.



The second thing is the connection between the subplots and the main plots. I agree with the OP that it's weak that the stories in Redcliffe, Circle of Magi, Orzammar, and Dalish Elves are unrelated to the darkspawn/Blight itself.It would've been much better if things are connected more clearly.



For example, let's talk about Orzammar. The main problem is that they don't have a king. Okay, but then what? There's no real branch than that. Not having a king could've and should've led to other things. Legion of the Dead should not stay in the Deep Roads because nobody is paying them with the lack of king for Orzammar. Then maybe the darkspawn had become more and more active because of the Archdemon's near appearance, and combined with the political turmoil in Orzammar, maybe the darkspawn are about to enter Orzammar. This will make things more urgent for the Warden to solve the problem about the king, but it'll still be related to the main story of the Blight.
