i recently got this game(boxing day) and i love it, just completed my 1st playthrough on normal difficulty, and got about halfway with a few playthroughs before i restarted.

my party is always Shale,Leliana and Alistair(my 3 favourite characters by miles) so i don't want to change that.
i've always been a mage and as they require alot of managing and directing i always felt quite involved with all fights, ive never used spirit healer and only occasionally use health poultices, generally i get the best gear as soon as possible so i regen health and very rarely get hit/ the enemies die before they get a chance.

however ive tried to start as a rogue DW, and another time as a rogue archer and alot of the time combat is a drag, as in i just press x to attack and the odd ability, basically there is very little i actually do compared to controlling a mage. obviously i position them for backstabs and use whichever abilitys are available but it seems like im alot less involved with determining the outcome of the fight, as a mage id simply freeze the opponents for shale/alistair(templar/champion specialisation, he has that war axe from the camp dwarf) to smash to peices and Leli(bard/duelist specialisation) would use dual wield of starfang and that really good dagger(dark rose or something). and together with me freezing the opponents, and casting numerous other spells we'd win most boss fights 1st time with no reload

anyway it was always a blast being the mage and controlling each fight, always thinking what to do next but i want to try as a rogue, and ive found it quite boring to be honest so does anyone have any tips, tactics or certain things i should do as a rogue?

its not that my rogue is weak, i just feel im perhaps using the setup wrong and/or investing in the wrong talents or skills which may be why im not enjoying it as much.

I'm not going to say anything on archer...

But for DW rogue, yes they are not as involved as a mage is, no class is. The mage by far requires the most micro-managing. But I find controlling a DW rogue to actually require a lot of concentration, makin sure you are in the proper backstab place, using stealth to get ahead and disarm all traps. Stunning/and/or/picking up something attacking the mage.

It could simply be that DW rogue is not your playstyle, and there is nothing wrong with that. Try out some other classes and see how you feel.

My one big suggestion is try not to ALWAYS stick with just those three companions, you would be surprised on which ones grow on you and which ones you stop liking after playing with others.

For instance: My first playthrough I hated Leliana, now on my 4th/5th playthroughs she is one of my favorite companions. I also hated Sten (gameplay wise and personality wise), but he is slowly growing on me. I used to think Alistair and Morrigan were the best things ever, but they have dipped below others. Give it a shot. Sometimes a different party composition can make a PC character more enjoyable as well.

As another instance, my 2h warrior was "meh, alright" to play with, when it was him, Morrigan/Wynne, leliana, Alistair. Now I am running my 2h PC, Sten 2h, oghren 2h, and Wynne/Morrigan with haste and I think it is the best thing ever.

So mix it up some, you could be surprised.

i kinda like being a ranged attacker more but i feel being melee is not as fun unless u r fighting a huge battle. In my short experience with a DW rogue there r very useful in singling out an enemy and chipping away at the horde one enemy at a time instead of charging into battle like a Warrior

Remember also you can role play into the specializations. I've played a straight Rogue, right now I'm playing as a Ranger (technically a Rogue, but with the build he's more than half warrior) and soon I plan on playing an assassin who is going to make every bad choice you can make in this game, just for fun.

thanks for the tips Image IPB

i think il give a dual wield rogue another crack and scrap archery, i think archery can be useful when you get AoS/scattershot but its alot of investing in a couple of talent lines just for 1 thing from each, then again doing that may mean my whole party is pure melee, so what i may do is train Leli as an archer rogue, have Shale as the tank, alistair as just a classic warrior/DD and il then use my rogue to backstab, stun and flank the enemy.
also with 2 rogues i won't need to invest in lock tools/stealing as Leli can do that whilst i can focus on stealth and dual wield talents and take a more offensive approach.
i havn't got a lot of experience with this sort of RPG, generally i used to play mainly real time and turn based strategy games, so i quite enjoy the tactics of this game(after playing them that may be why i like to fully control the fight), my only other real RPG ive played would be oblivion and in that i usually focussed on a rogue type character with archery and blade skills(and i got to level 49 on that) but thats an entirely different system and style compared to DA:O.

despite me only completing 1 full playthrough ive actually played this game alot more except never continuing, i would think of a better way to do my PC and restart, so ive probably got about 3/4 playthroughs worth of time played.
during that time ive used just about every party member, i used to be a fan of morrigan and sten but towards the end of a playthrough i had to take alistair for 1 particular mission and i decided i preferred him to sten, and i much prefer leliana to morrigan now, it also helps that alistair and leliana pretty much always both agree with the decisions i make, whilst with morrigan someone would always lose approval no matter which decision i made. most of the time i like to go with the good decisions so my current favourite party works great.
also who doesn't like shale? an incredible tank and has some funny comments and cutscenes throughout the game, like when travelling to the mages tower and the templar won't let you cross, shale says he'll crush his head and he soon lets us pass Image IPB

To be more involved you could develop your poison- and trap-making skills. Maxed stealth will help to set up the traps and then you can run back and agro with arrow-fire (still in stealth for 100% crit).

I prefer the utility classes and also prefer bow over daggers, so although the gameplay is slower than say playing a mage, it is different and very rewarding once you get used to pace.

EDIT: And totally agree with fantasypisces re: mixing up your party each play-through. I just did an all-boys with Oghren/Zevron, Sten and Alistair - definately my most fun game yet.

If you're on the PC get the Advanced Tactics and More Tactic Slots Per Level mods.

AT fixes many bugs and gives you more options. MTSPL gives you, well, more tactic slots per level :P.
