Well, I'll start it off with the obvious questions. What is your setup? SOA, TOB, patch, fixpack, and/or SCSII? Other mods?
I'll also assume you've played through the game before. Soloing, particularly a mage, is not for first-timers (see the discussion in this thread below: http://social.biowar.../index/14762259)

Unless you know well where the traps are and what they do, I'd recommend to consider an M/T or even F/M/T for your first run.
With a mage, you're not locked into your spell choices as a sorceror would be, so you can just try out different things and see what works for you. Generally, it might be a good idea to make sure your defenses are sound for what you're facing, unless you enjoy regular reloads.

Assuming that you have played enough to know what your favorite spells are, I would take the contrary viewpoint and recommend sorcerer. You don't want to run out of spells in the midst of a battle and you're not really rich enough until ToB to buy unlimited scrolls and wands.

yes iv gone through the game quite a few times and i see the point of a sorcerer (having more spells) im not running scsII or tactics because as this is my first time soloing id like to take it slow per say and also i do know where the traps are. i have SOA and TOB.

You need to think about what sort of tactics you will employ. You could class these into the following:
1) Offensive spell user. Tries to quickly take down enemies. Area effect spells like fireball and horrid wilting will be particularly helpful here.
2) Summoner. Relies on helpful allies. Summoning spells themselves will obviously be useful, but don't forget buffing spells for your allies (such as strength of one and haste) - these can make a huge difference to their capability.
3) Melee. Not for the faint-hearted, but using polymorph self along with various buffing spells can turn a mage into a formidable melee opponent from a fairly early stage in BG2 (gets a lot better after improved haste is available).
Also think ahead about what items you're going to want to use and plan your journeys to get these at an early stage.

On my first solo I tried a multiclass cleric/mage, and to deal with traps I installed a mod called useful familiars. This is no longer available anywhere, but what it did is simple enough to do yourself in shadowkeeper.
First, figure out which familiar you have if you haven't already summoned one www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG2/familiars.php
If you have summoned one, kill it. Don't forget to add a point to your constitution, or remove the effect which lowers your constitution because your familiar died.
Fire up shadowkeeper www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG2/index_editors.php
Find the .cre file for your specific familiar. Note there are two, one for SoA & one for ToB, so eg the cat (chaotic neutral) is famcat.cre & famcat25.cre.
Change the class from mage to mage/thief.
Edit the thieving abilities to whatever you feel you can live with. The mod changed traps & thieving to 90%, and probably something to hide in shadows.

Just don't forget to put your familiar away whenever you do an area transition. Having them "out" during those times can really mess things up.

The good thing about a mage (vs. sorcerer) is that you are not locked into a particular playstyle. You can be a summonner one day and a blaster mage the next.

I always did run with sorcerer (am replaying again as a sorc, but this time with a party), just seems like you don't actually need all the choice of a wizard, can makedo with the "limited" spell selection of a sorc just fine.
I always went along with the "what will always be necessary?" and that includes spells to strip enemies of protections (spell breach, secret word etc.), cast your own protections (mirror image, stoneskin, spell protections (turning, deflection and there is a 9th level spell protection spell that is beyond awesome, can't remember the name, used it to kill kangaxx with no trouble (it got me unlimited melfs minute meteors)), lower resistances and saving throws, crowd control (web and timestop) for early game web and summon spider is so awesome, aoe spells (for invisible enemies and groups: fireball, cloudkill, abi dalzims horrid wilting etc), also make sure your able to kill enemies (trolls: melfs acid arrow/fire arrow).
and; magic missiles, magic missiles (if enemies have spell turning on you can cast 5 magic missiles at them and only get one back to your own face).
Spells mentioned are imo mandatory, but I think you can probably solo at least SoA with any kind of setup aslong as you use a bit of common sense
