In totally related news, Valve has started a closed beta test for its new 'Steam on Linux' product and Nvidia has released a new linux driver that doubles graphics performance in Left For Dead 2 on linux.
It's looking as though Valve really is making the big push. Anyone think it will spill over to other gaming companies?

Yes. Some developers are shifting towards Linux a little, particularly now we've seen Win 8 and its... questionable features. Some games for Steam on Linux have already appeared, or will do shortly, like Dungeons of Dredmor.
I don't think Linux gaming will be an AAA thing yet, there's too much dependence on XNA, DirectX, etc., but it looks to me like indie studios are indeed moving in that direction.

What qualities do you like in an operating system and of those, which are the most important?
