I'm pretty sure the default barrel would be giving you more damage...
???
I'm talking about the new barrel that gives you increased weight, AP (which ignores like 90% of enemy armor) and increased damage. looks just like the tip of the widow/black widow too.

Maybe someday I'll get a Valiant and I'll try those mods on it, but 'til then, BW all the way.

The standard extended barrel at V increases this to 1108 (+25%)
The new HVB at II increases this to 1041.52 (+17.5%)
Using them against armour, we have to subtract a set amount of damage. This is 50 on gold. The HVB II ignores 35% of this, so it becomes 32.5
The final damage values vs armour are 1058 for the EB V and 1009.02 for the HVB II.
Conclusion: you are better off with the EB V. Armour negation isnt that significant for high damage weapons.

It's true that adding the Heavy Barrel to the Mantis X makes it deal about 90% of the damage of a Widow X. The same is true of adding the Extended Barrel to the Mantis X, actually, since they grant the same damage bonus.Mattmagnum wrote...
Anyone else try out the new barrel mod for the sniper rifles? a level 2 version of it on a level X mantis(single shot one..mantis right?) makes the mantis almost as strong as a Widow X and half the weight, really breaths new life into them, yay!
Of course, that's only true as long as the Widow is unmodded. A Mantis X with a Heavy Barrel V weighs 1.5 and does 1108 damage per round; a Widow X with an Extended Barrel V weighs 2.0 and does 1558 damage.

Pretty sure that barrel does 25% bonus damage at Level V, right? The Default already does this.
Sure, you would have to put both AP and the Barrel on, instead of just one mod, but than you keep a low weight and to be fair, means we've had this crazy combination for awhile now

Also worth noting that the competition for mod slots on the sniper rifle isn't very fierce. That is, you do save a slot by equipping the Heavy Barrel instead of Extended Barrel + AP Mod--but what are you going to use the extra slot for?Doommarine23 wrote...

nah, seriously, I think the weight is the main issue for me, then I can throw on the ammo mod and have more rounds.

I'm assuming we're still comparing Widow X + Ext Barrel/AP Mod versus Mantis X + Heavy Barrel/Spare Clip.Mattmagnum wrote...
I reject your reality and substitute my own! bwahaha

The difference is 450 damage--40% of the Mantis' damage, and about 30% of the Widow's. In exchange for that massive loss in damage, the Mantis gives back 0.5 weight and 19 spare rounds (36 versus 17). You're the only one who can tell whether that's a reasonable exchange for you, but objectively it looks pretty bad.
