Mages (and other wizards) rely heavily on intelligence.
Clerics (and other priests) rely heavily on wisdom.

But what does wisdom do anything for mages?
Does intelligence do anything for clerics?

I'm thinking of doing a sorcerer playthrough and I was wondering if my character needs wisdom.

Provided that you've assigned 18, or higher, in your prime category(s), it's not a bad idea to equally distribute the remaining points amongst the other categories. Obviously, this is much easier for a mage than for a cleric, who can use fighting abiities.
If you ever hit zero in any category you are Dead. And there are a few spots where you can be penalized a point in various categories.
In BG2 it's not a bad idea to have Intel=11, even if you are a pure fighter
For some "occupations" like Ranger, Paladin, etc., you need a broad spectrum of abilities.

Mind flyers have an attack that does intel damage and there are spells that need up to 18 (or below 11) wisdom in order to get the better results... This is a non-spoiler forum so thats as far as I can go.

You may want at least 9 intelligence for a cleric - in order to allow use of scrolls and wands.

IIRC, a Sorcerer does not need intelligence (other than the required minimum). 9 is enough to use wands and scrolls.
(In PnP rules, you need a certain amount of INT to cast spells of a certain spell level but this isn't implemented in BG.)

Other than what has been sad in the thread already, INT and WIS has an effect on Lore. It´s nice to have at least 10 in both - that avoids penalty to Lore.

So for a sorcerer, I'm thinking on focusing on a maximum damage build.

Destructive magic. (missiles, fire balls, acid arrows, melfs meteors etc)
Only the most powerful summning spells (no point having lower level summoning spells. Spell slots are limited)
A couple of buffs (but only for protection. I don't wish to engage in melee combat.)

What do you think are the best spells for this build?
What should my stats look like?

How do I avoid that blasted level drain!
In my Mage/Cleric playthrough, Jaheria got level drained. This meant I only had one effective healer (the main character).

I won't be doing the sorcerer playthrough yet. I haven't completed the Cleric/mage playthrough.

- Some items give immunity
- Negative Plane Protection (3rd-level priest spell) gives a short-term protection (5 rounds). Crappy duration, but the good thing is that it has a fast casting time. Jaheira should cast this on herself before tanking vampires and such.

After the fight, level drain can be cured with a Restoration spell. Lesser Restoration is a 4th-level Cleric spell (so if your Cleric still is at least 7, you can have them pick that spell, rest and have the Cleric cure themself). After the levels are restored for one of your spell casters, you need to re-assign spells for the restored spell slots and rest again to get them. Always have your spellcasters assign the most important spells of each spell level in the first slots (so they still have them if they get level drained a little).

There are also Restoration scrolls for sale in the game, and temples can also be paid to cure level drain.

Tip; don’t pick any spell that comes in wands/ items... IME ‘Summon Hakeashar’ is the only MUST HAVE but it’s very much a personal choice issue.

If you're playing through ToB and want to use the Wish spell, it'd be easiest to have wisdom of 18, though you could use potions instead. Other spell picks might depend on your install. There are several good threads on sorc spell picks still around.

Also - someone else will need to confirm - but iirc in vanilla, PfMW protects against vampires' level drain. It's even shorter than Negative Plane Protection (it's 4 rounds), but it's something.

It would make sense, since they have to hit you to drain levels.
