Everyone is probably familiar with the shatter spell combo where you critical a frozen enemy right? Do backstabs trigger this, or is it only random critical hits?

I do not remember any of my backstabs triggering shatter, but critical hits work like a charm.

Backstabs are not critical hits, so they cannot shatter enemies.

Nope, backstabs don't do it, only crits. It's so cool when you shatter multiples in a fight.

When the attack animation is a stabbing motion and the damage numerals are larger then normal your rogue has backstabbed an enemy.

Backstabbing has a unique attack animation and the damage number will be a big pop-up (just like the damage number of crit attacks) instead of the normal slowly rising one.
If you are a rogue, you will automatically backstab with any MELEE attack if you attack an enemy from behind. Check the black area of circle below your target. If you attack from within the black angle, you flank your enemy, gaining an attack (and I think damage) bonus. And if you are a rogue, your attack'll be a backstab. You can widen this angle to 180° with the rogue's Combat Movement talent. If your rogue doesn't backstab an enemy despite being behind him, the target's most likely immune to flanking and thus, backstabs. This is true or most shield-users of level 10+. Oh, and the unique Backstab Animation will only display on a successful hit. If you miss, your rogue will just use a standard attack animation.
Quick google search actually brought my attention to this video. Might help you getting the idea.
Hope that helps.
