I suggest something similar to the Mass Effect 3 system, where you had all kind of armor options, and then you could balance the best armor pieces together to fit your own playstyle.
Take that system to Dragon Age thank you very much. That way you could have options like:
chestplate a) armor 10 and + 2 to dexterity
chestplate
chestplate c) armor 10 and + 2 to strength
gauntlets a) armor 6 and + 1 to dexterity
gauntlets
gauntlets c) armor 6 and + 1 to strength
pants a) armor 8 and + 2 to dexterity
pants
pants c) armor 8 and + 2 to strength
helmet a) armor 5 and + 1 to dexterity
helmet
helmet c) armor 5 and + 1 to strength
So perhaps one player wants to go all constitution and would therefore pick the
I would like actual options instead of having the be all and end all item that is simply the best.
I still want progression and have items that are better than others. Finding a new item that is better than the one you have is cool. But senselessly switching items out for another and never having to think about why you choose one item over another is boring. Choosing one item over another because it is simply way better, is not an interesting choice. Having a choice between good items, that could be seen as equals, but still being different - like the examples I gave above is interesting.
