Hey everybody,

I'm not sure if this is allowed on these forums - so please forgive me if its not. I think its fair to say many RPG enthusiasts are saddened by the lack of multi-player RPGs which allow custom content and persistant worlds. Recently, I came across this kickstarter project:

http://www.kickstart...eneris?ref=live

I would encourage you guys to watch the presentation video in its entirety - it's very exciting stuff ! The technology used is awesome, and their toolset is really amazing. Its entirely procedurally generated, so when you create an area you don't have to paint every single little rock, it will actually automatically a path for example and you can edit it however you want !

The combat is also very impressive, especially that the whole game engine was pretty much built from scratch. Anyway, take a look, and if you like, make sure you make some noise on their forums to encourage them - or better yet, contribute to the kickstarter :).

Hmm... 5 people made that? It appears to be superior to most professionally made games. Amazingly realistic combat (see the giant battle) and perfect physics (see moving chairs and tables).

I've never seen a game of this calibre (systemwise) before. Seems too good to be true...

Edit: It's disconcertig how perfect this game looks. How can it look that good and function that well when no one else has managed to come close to this level of achievement.

(This is based on the video)

I totally hear you Banshee, but this is the real deal. The fact is, there is very little investment these days (at least until Kickstarter showed up) in isometric rpg games. Most lastest-gen engines are optimized for different game types - and many use one of the big three (Unreal, CryEngine, Unity).

And by the way, that engine is the work of one guy - Madoc, the team leader. The other mainly assisted in assets (3d, textures, sound).

Its highly promising, but needs support, so spread the word and drop by their forums for the latest info.

I suppose the thought that is troubling me is how one man who doesn't even seem to have professional game experience (hasn't worked in a game studio) could do what entire game studios cannot.

Overall, I believe this to be true (the real deal) but I'm baffled as to how this happened.

Well that's what the whole kickstarter revolution is all about: making things happen that otherwise would not. For a long time, publishers had the first and final say on what got made and what did not. Today, that is changing - hence the appearance of projects like these, among others.

Seems very nice - but a long way away from goal. Will have to try and slip one past the wife....

It's amazing what a difference some decent lighting algorithms can make. The physics system is impressive too.

The character animations need some work though. Some motion-capture animations would be the cherry on top.

And I'd give one of several paired body parts for those auto-texturing terrain features in the toolset!

This crew looks sharp, and the features are impressive. I hope it succeeds.

I also hope it'll be possible to boost the colour saturation, because I dislike washed-out palettes.

Yeah their toolset really looks awesome - how the procedural engine fills in the detials like rocks, shrubs, and blending in the background, but still allows for manual editing. I can't help but feel that that's what the NWN2 Toolset should have been - basically offering powerful features but getting out of the player's way by automating minutia.

As for the animations - those were made by the core developer, and he has absolutely no animation training. There is tremendous room for improvements, and thats definitely in the works.

When I first heard about this project, I thought the team was trying to present this as sort of "The BEST RPG ever!", without detailing exactly what kind of game, or hiking simulator, they were making.

Then when the subject was raised about the toolset, which as many people indicate seems very powerful and impressive, the team hinted that the tools might not even be released to the end user. Something about it being too technically advanced for the casual/hobby builder.

So is this project's objective to create a finished RPG, or is the purpose to create a toolset the no one will be allowed to use? There was just some conflicting information in the initial reception.

It does look really cool - but like Dorateen says; a toolset that no one can use? or what?

I imagine that the engine is performance dependent on the system it is played on, but these days that mightn't be much of an issue.

I think at this point, given the amount of enthusiasm the nascent community has expressed about modding tools and the toolset in general, it's a pretty sure thing. They've updated their FAQ section in the kickstarter page to say that it will include a toolset. Also one of the rewards allows a contributor to use the standalone toolset to build a dungeon level of their choice.

Honestly, given the demand and their latest updates, I'd be very surprised if they didn't. The bigger concern is if the demanding physics system will be a suitable fit for a large mutliplayer server. Thats something they're still looking into.

Maybe you should also post this into the off-topic section mentioning the physics system in the title. The system seriously looks impressive and the giant fight had me feeling sorry for the poor knight afterwards especially at how the giant just knocked him all over the place. The giant even kicked the knight when he was down!

Hopefully it reaches its goal.

This looks very cool indeed the landscapes looked very impressive. I have some buts though I am sure they will be addressed. One is the bouncing chair. If the pathfinding is not perfect then chnaces are the npcs are going to knock all the furniture over :)

Like Dann I think this seems amazing for one part time developer ...

The animations are petty bad -- the combatants look like they're drunk. But that's a small thing if they can the rest going.

You're not the only one that thought that, some supporter made a video. :o

Drunken fights worked well in The Witcher. You could even choose special abilities that enhanced your combat prowess only when drunk. Giving all potions in the game a high alcohol content could account for seemingly drunken behaviour. Image IPB

Then again, hay-maker swings and clumsy footwork are exactly what you'd expect from a level 1 character - provided the fighting animations improved as you gained levels.
