I really do hope we will be allowed to keep a simple friendship with potential LI's of either gender in thisgame, and still be able to get at least nearly as far in terms of their personal questline/story and character development.

I'll use Jack from ME as an example why not doing so is a bad idea. Seriously, a female PC is not allowed to really connect with her emotionally or try to help her with her problems ever. And the only way a male PC can do it, is to literally sex it out of her.

What the hell, Bioware. That's pretty darn nauseating. And offensive.

"PTSD, huh? My penis is exactly what you need!" Yeah. Riiiiiight.

Point is, plationic relationships can affect a person just as much as an intimate one can. A real, true friend is just as great of a gem as any lover. We should be allowed to connect with our companions emotionally, support them and try to help them deal with their issues, AND just stay friends.

Kind of like a female PC in DAO sort of could with Morrigan. That was cool. Two dark, cold, selfish girls = best friends forever.

Keep doing that. Just like that.

I can't say I understand.
I never felt locked out when I play as a certain gender.

Right. So you think the best way to point out this "flawed system" of DA is complimenting the way the DA team handled it and criticizing the way the ME team handled it. Makes sense.

Well, with some characters the DA team made some mistakes too. In other words, just do it right and don't copy what the ME team did. Whoever decided to do that should be slapped in the mouth.

Like Zevran for example. Pretty much the only way to keep him from betraying you was to become his bedroll buddy. Otherwise? Nearly impossible.

Mass Effect's writers aren't Dragon Age's writers, so I wouldn't worry.

(Luke and Sylvia might have written for ME but they've been absorbed in to the DA writers group.)

Never romanced Zevran and he's never betrayed me either. :?

Only on BSN would people ask to be friendzoned. Only on BSN would people pay to be friendzoned.

I think you might had missed a gift or two or just not gotten him to high approval enough.

I have to disagree with this example. I've got three Wardens, only one of which was ever in a relationship with Zevran (the other two shut him down immmediately when he started flirting with them in the fist conversation, even), and none of them were ever betrayed. The encounter's outcome is tied to his approval, it's not actually that high an approval bar if I recall correctly, and it is absolutely possible to max out Zevran's approval without any kind of relationship (and without the Feastday DLC).

On-topic: this is actually one of the things DA has done spectatularly well in both incarnations, actually. Romances have always felt like they added an extra dimension to the character without diminishing the character's non-romance character arcs.

This. You don't need to bed him at all to do it. In fact, I questioned his belief about assassin's alot and he still ended up siding with me.  In fact, all you need is more than around 25 approval.

I thought Zevran had a great friendship path. My PC and Zevran are almost always best friends, romantic or not. I actually had to decrease his approval on purpose to just get that betrayal scene. You're just playing the game differently but the friendship is definitely there.

Mass Effect series (especially ME2) had some huge problems in this regard but Dragon Age has done a pretty good job. Would I like deeper friedships? Sure, but it's not exactly an alarming issue that has to be improved. DA writing team is doing fine.

It would be nice to have more friendship specific scenes, which you couldn't access if you pursue a romance. Each relationship would be special no matter its nature. That's expensive though and we can't have everything.

I agree, Zevran was very easy to friendship without sex. He would proposition you at some point (just like all bi-sexual Bioware LI's) but ultimately one "no" and it was business as usual. I don't even think it cost you any approval points.

How is Varric anything other than a platonic life partner? And Isabella is is too, you can sail away with her romanced or not. In fact all the teammates in DA2 are, not sure what the problem is.

I think Mass Effect's the bad example in this case. Jack indeed only could be 'cured' by having sex with Shepard, otherwise her dialogue just shuts down at a certain point and she is stuck with her problems for the rest of the game. Same with Miranda whose 'daddy issues' get 'solved' by a nice dose of Shep's magic penis. And finally there's the Asari, who are a joke as a race on their own. 'Mono-gendered' was just a petty excuse to create a harem of pretty female aliens to make male (or female) players drool at their screen.
