Hey guys (and of course, girls),
I have a question for you:
why do some of you "roleplay" ... your characters?
why do i ask?
because i just can't, ...
so, please answer me this, how can you do it and why do you do it?
and: will you do it in DA3 - even if it upsets your moral compass more then the most controversial decisions we have had up to now?
greetings LAX
I roleplay because it's fun, because it flexes my creative muscle a little bit, my analytic muscle a little bit, and just generally lets my imagination play into my game. For me, it's like writing a story or drawing a scene. If I do either of those, I usually use characters that aren't me doing things I wouldn't do or haven't done or might've been inspired in some way to explore.
When I play a game, my character is never me. He or she might have a few similar qualities, they might be very alien, or they might be basically modelled after me. I play characters of all types. But I don't consider any of those characters to be me. They're me looking through someone else's eyes at the world through the prism of their experiences and their biases and their inclinations, not mine (unless it's a self model).
So when they make moral decisions, that's not me. That's following what that character would do, what they'd say, how they'd feel. I try to step into their head and experience the situation from their point of view (like you would when considering another person's point of view). It's an interesting and fun play exercise.
Yes, I'll definitely roleplay in DA3:I. I hope to continue six worlds with DA with six characters each game, and every single one will be unique. ;-) Whether they make a moral decision I would find reprehensible or not, any of them, is up to the characters I come up with at the time of character creation, purely on whim, what they'd do. There are some decisions I won't take in a given game not because I would or wouldn't make that decision, but simply because none of my characters, at that point in their developement, would have made that decision.
I do take these things into account at character creation on replays, thinking I'll come up with a character that might do X, Y, Z, different than the last, but depending on their character arc, they may still not do the things I thought they would when I created them.
So.. not sure how to label my style. Disassociative personal insertion, maybe? I'm in their head, but it's not mine, but they only exist in my head. ... ... ... lol, something like that. I play from a variable perspective lens.
edit: As a for instance, like some have said, I can't play a pro-Templar Hawke, not because I can't play pro-Templar characters, but because with Hawke's background, I can't see any version of him/her making that decision. I could make that decision if I was purely playing the game mechanics, but I can't roleplay it. I roleplay purely as the character, so all my Hawkes will be pro-Mage.
