WARNING: Very Spoiler-ish!
I've been playing this game for some time on Normal. I've completed the Human Noble quest, Ostagar, Lothering and the village of Redcliffe, and I never found the difficult anything but pleasantly challenging. Then I went to the castle, the basement was very easy actually, but then, on the first floor, I started getting multiple persistent injuries in almost every battle. My character is here. My main problem is that enemies gather on me in ungodly numbers, sometimes more than ten. What I’ve been doing is using Morrigan’s Mind Blast to stun them for a small amount of time, and then using Dog’s Dread Howl to same effect. Alistair has Threaten active and when he is being hit by the crowd I usually have Morrigan cast Force Shield on him, while my warrior and the Dog try to kill them one by one. However, by the time we have one or two down, the Shield expired and 3 seconds later Alistair is dead. Then the enemies turn to another, and there is little I can do before they are dead too.
I have been trying to win a fight (spoiler:the one with the mabari hounds) and I has forced to reload at least twenty times now. At best, I manage to kill two of them.
I post this because it is so odd. I found difficulty to be very manageable up until now, and then, all of sudden, it seems I am dead in less than a minute in every fight!
Does anybody have any ideas? If you need more info, just ask!
Thanks in advance :)

Strategies, it's your answer. You cant just always rush into the hall and kill everything that moves. Try to lure enemies, that kind of things.

Tried that. I can't do it. As soon as one sees my character, they all do. And then comes the loadscreen.

I had quite the same problem the first time i played DA. Dont be afraid to use Poultices if you have any, change the tactics? maybe party setup?

Yes defo mix up your tactics a little till you find one that works and healer and health potions help. I had issues when i first started it take bit of time but i tried different tatics till i had the perfect tactic for situations.

Thanks for the advice

Party setup is kinda impossible, since all companions I have ATM are Alistair, Morrigan and the Dog.

I use Poultices liberally, but sometimes I'm dead before the last Poultice cooldown is finished. I have them all set to drink a poultice should any of them reach low health, and use active combat talents and passive ones when appropriate (ie:using Shield Cover when under ranged fire, use Shield Defense when under multiple attacks). This has served me well so far, but now, it seems nothing will make any difference. I just managed to kill three dogs, by having everyone attacking one at the same time, and when Alistair reached critical health cast Force Shield on him (gotta love that spell) But then, and after most of my poultices, it all ended with the loadscreen showing up.

In castle within group of monsters there are always some higher ranked creatures, try to kick them out of the game for some time - horror etc.

Advice to me is almost always the same:

1. Inflict as much damage as possible before they hit you - ranged magics and missile fire. Inferno and those sort of spells work very well.

2. Break up the waves. Winters Grasp, Cone of Cold, Pinning Shot, Force Field all keep things "stuck" so you can deal with the foes in pieces.

3. Stun those that get close - you are doing this it sounds like- things like Horror and Disorient serve the same purpose.

4. Attack only one target at a time. Adjust your tactics to have your NPC's target the same target as the PC or at least have the NPC's all target the same foe while you make decisions about whacking other things. There's no advantage to wounding anything in the game so only killing a target removes the threat. This is also important if you get sleep as anything you attack wakes up so you want to attack them bit by bit.

On my first playthru I had Alister, meself (rogue/two sword), Wynn and Morrigan. Wynn casts Earthquake to knock enemies off feet, this keeps them in place whilst Morrigan casts Blizzard, so by the time groups get out of that, if they do between being knocked down by quake or wind, or being frozen, they are weak and more easily dispatched. Had hard time dealing with those dogs to.  Same spell combo deals well with ALL massive enemy groups.

Like said... stunning, freezing, and all other holder holding strategies work fine... best thing yet... there are some special magic combos which insta-kill enemies, and some of those spells needed recharge quick (winter frost + any heavy attack (like the one which throws up a stone) is half of the time an instant kill through shattering them)

My tactic withe the Castle mabari dog fight is to place your team as far away as possible. A good place is that great hall where those demons are (clear this). Then I try to pull, just by showing myself at the door. With luck you aggro two or three, run towards your team and slaughter them.

Now the bad case scenario. You get them all five at you. Again run towards the room where your buddies are. You can enter on one side and exit on the other side. You can run in circles, being chased by the hounds. At some point there will only be a couple of hounds in the room. Let Morrigan freeze on an let the others attack him. You have to pause a lot, give orders to the team members individually, but you can take them out almost one by one.
