. . .She became obssesed, but that word is not strong enough.  Blessed stone, there was nothing left of her but the Anvil.

We tried to escape, but they found, took us all, Turned us.

The men they kill, are merciful.  But the women, the women they want to touch, to mold, to change like them.

They took Laryen, to change her.  She tore off her husbands face, drank his blood.

And while she ate, she grew, she swelled and turned grey.  (whispers) and she smelled like them.  They remade her in their image, and she made more of them. . .

BROODMOTHER.

Read that.

Hmmm. It still says Ghouls expire after a few months. Hespith has been down there for over a year.

Still creepy. I didn't realise Hespith is on her way to becoming Branka Broodmother #2.

Well she's not a full on Ghoul YET.

When she is . . . well, you know.

Because they would be killed at initiation if it failed?

If they are GW, shouldn't they be immune to Broodmotherification (<- The scientific term) due to "mastering" their taint. Otherwise, going into the deep roads before dying is an extremely stupid move.

It was, quite frankly, the scariest thing I've witnessed in a long time. Hat's off to whoever voiced Hespith, you made me afraid to go around the next corner.

I, too, would hunt down the broodmothers. I'd take that army I collected, and move into the Deep Roads. Clear them out, burn them all.

On that note . . .

Is it me or does the Dwarf noble sided with Behlen have the "best" ending when it comes to pwning the Darkspawn?

I have to give major props to both the writer of that section and the voice actress.  It isn't so much boo-scary as... slowly horrifying.  Because the first time she says the Litany of Days - piece by piece as you progress into that section of the trenches, you are sort of not getting it really, and looking around for who is talking.  And then as you move further in and she repeats that litany again in its entirety, in the exact same tone and inflection and you listen better.  And it's awful.

Genuinely one of the creepier moments in a game for me - it sets up Broodmom confrontation so very well, and frankly, for me, ultimately makes it impossible for me to give Branka the time of day, given that she had to make some sort of devil's own bargain to pursue her obsession.

That section was really done well, in a way that's truly horrifying rather than the cheap "ZOMG LOOK AT TEH SCARY FACE DAT JUMPED OUT!" that's pretty much the only type used nowadays. The buildup with the creepy song/poem/whatever, seeing the state Hespith is in, finally seeing a Broodmother, and then thinking about it all. It's perfect.

There's no way that means what it sounds like... in her mouth? They're ****ing darkspawn, do they even know how to do that...? And why would they...? Urgh, I'm just going to stop thinking about this...

In the mouth? Uh, you probably should have paid a bit more attention during Sex Ed while you were at school...

Well, darkspawn like to do things a little different, apparently.  Nobody with a mouth is safe.

Nobody.

Remember the Chasind guy who stands in front of the chantry crying doom™ ?

He watched his wife dragged away by darkspawn...

Hespith - once you get to Bownammar (am I spelling that right?). Basically, past the Dead Trenches - heh.

I never finished with my dwarf noble - how is it different?

And yeahh there's a few instances where people mention women being dragged off by darkspawn. Well, the only ones I remember are women. Wasn't that girl in Redcliffe's mother dragged away? Or was she just killed?

The girl in Redcliffe's mother was dragged away by undead. Also gruesome, but not as.. perverse.. as becoming a broodmother.

Agreed, the broodmother thing seems to be another path darkspawn corruption can take. Since as a Grey Warden you've already ingested the taint, they can't do anything more to turn you. On the other hand, after 30 or so years of having the taint, you end up with more and more dreams, right? And that's when you go to Orzammar to die. Whee.

1) What happens to Wardens during times of non-Blights? Presumably they still have dreams but there's no active archdemon to 'talk' to them?
2) What is it about the dreams that tells you your time has come? Do you feel compelled to go to the Deep Roads to die?
3) If that's so, how are you really different than a ghoul? Does the darkspawn taint have something in common with blood magic mind control?

The whole Dead Trenches area is actually some of the best horror I've seen in years.

Real horror isn't about splattering gore and flying body parts, it's not about jumpy-scary things popping around a corner to accompanying music stings. It's about playing with the viewer's or reader's mind, implying frightening and gruesome and stomach-turning things without describing or displaying them in aching detail. Let the subject's mind fill in the blanks; they'll always imagine something worse than you could have created, or probably even intended for the scene.

Just that one section, the first time I walked into it, had me scared to go around each corner with that creepy rhyme going on... and then when I walked into the Broodmother cavern and figured out exactly what had happened I felt sick to my stomach. Didn't concentrate on the fight too well and ended up wiping... which meant reloading and going through it all again. Yay.

More well-written horror in half an hour than any horror movie in the past, oh, decade. At least.

So yeah, BioWare writers?  Good work.  We always suspected, but now we KNOW that you're a bunch of sick freaks.

Well, the grey warden ritual is a bit different(and i really would love to find out how the hell they even discovered it), as it includes the use of magic, Lyrium and archdemon-blood.
And yes, it is similar to a ghoul, but slower.
